When we arrived at The Breakwater Inn we were so glad to find we had found a nice place over the telephone as many rooms were booked at the Outerbanks. We were glad and the deck and view was spectacular! I would recommend this property to anyone! It is also convenient that Oden's Restaurants is right next door. You can walk to eat and shop which is also great!

If you have a pet, you will stay at the smaller strip motel on the property called the Fisherman's Quarters. It's a nice little place, approximately 10 rooms & 1 efficiency, for the price. It was easier to get ice from the little convenience store behind the motel than climbing 2 flights of stairs at the Breakwater Inn. There is no maid service if you have to leave your pet in the room alone but we just left our used towels on the bench outside the door and we had fresh towels every morning when we awoke. It is very close to the ferry. The room was smaller than what is shown on the website but you're not there to sit in the room. One problem was the bathroom was very tiny. No place to hang the toilet paper! The only other problem was since this motel was built probably in the 1970s, there are very few outlets. To run the microwave, you had to unplug either the refrigerator or the tv. Needless to say, we rarely used the microwave and we took our own coffee pot since the ones in hotels are for one or two small cups.

I have stayed at the Breakwater Inn at least 4 times, and the last two stays (2007 and 2008), I was very disappointed in the lack of cleanliness of the room. This is a fairly new facility and the staff are obviously not taking care of the rooms. The floor and carpet were filthy (I would not take my shoes off the entire time), sheets are getting very old, bathroom was not clean when I arrived...I had to clean it myself and the housekeeping didn't do an adequate job of cleaning the rooms during the stay. They sort of made the beds and clearly didn't scrub the bathrooms. The kitchen sink had rust spots, mini-frig needed deftosting/cleaning, and the countertop was not wipped cleaned. Upon checkout the last stay, I brought my concerns to the front desk; however, they didn't seem too concerned because I was checking out...I should have said something upon check-in. At this rate, the hotel will decline rapidly, as many beach facilities do if not kept up.

On a positive note, the view from the deck is wonderful and the staff are pleasant.

We spent three nights here over Memeorial Day weekend. It was clean, quiet, and the staff was helpful and friendly. The front desk gave me a loaner hair dryer when I discovered I left mine at home and they had a nice selection of teas for the non coffee drinkers in the morning. Sitting on the deck in the morning watching the boats leaving for the day was relaxing and fun. I look forward to my next visit!

We have been staying here for several years now. We rent houses in Hatteras for long stays of a week or more, but always use the Breakwater when we are going down for just a weekend. Usually we are chartering out of Oden's Dock, which is home base for the Breakwater. The rooms in the new part are wonderful. They are clean and efficient (with a sink and small refrigerator). But the best part of the whole experience is the view. Early in the morning you can sit on your deck and watch the hustle and bustle of the captains readying their boats for the day's fishing. In the afternoon you can sit there and watch all the boats unloading their catch. People from all over the village come to the docks in the afternoon to see who caught what! As the sun sets over the sound you can watch the end of the day with an incredible sunset. The Breakwater Restaurant is on the same property and has wonderful meals. They also have a deck where you can watch the water and drink a cold beer or have a glass of wine. On some nights there will be a live band playing and people milling around the dock just taking it easy.

If you are going to Hatteras and plan to charter, give Patrick Caton on the Litle Clam a call. He will definitely put you on the fish and you will leave Hatteras with enough fish to fill your freezer until the next time!

Nice new building, they have non-smoking title, but when you get to the deck witht the adirondack chairs, you have a table with an ashtray. Great view of marina and pamlico sound, the restaurant acroos the street, Sonny's is a fantastic breakfast. Also open for lunch and dinner too.

I would definitely stay away from the smoking and pet friendly rooms, thery are in the old motel section off the water , no view, really stinky and nasty small bathrooms. Stayed there with a smoking friend, not again.

All in all though a great stay and the staff was very helpful with late arrivals and answered questions about local sights very happily.

If you are going to chartet, use Capt. Neff Mathews at the Hatteras Harbor marina, the fishing there is great. No other area compares for the raw beauty and solitude of the NC lower Outer Banks and Ocracoke Island, make sure to take the free ferry trip over and drive the 15 miles or so down to Ocracoke Village. Howards Pub there is the spot for local seafood.

Imagine the peace: You've arrived at the end of the earth, you're comfortably ensconsed in an Adirondack chair with a nice cold beverage, looking from your balcony out over the Pamlico Sound at sunset. You had a front-row seat for the arrivals of the offshore sportfishing fleet at the harbor right below. You watched as semi-tame pelicans vied for scraps from the day's catch. If you wanted, you could check your e-mail, but why bother? The beach beckons, not far away, and superb cuisine at the Breakwater Restaurant right next door.

The family-owned Breakwater Inn at Oden's Dock in Hatteras Village specializes in Hospitality with a capital H. There are a couple of dozen spotless comfortable, relatively new, non-smoking two-queen-bedded rooms (and a couple of king suites), each with a private balcony overlooking the docks and the water. There's a pool, a nice bookshelf with novels and local lore for those rainy days, several outstanding restaurants within a short walk, free highspeed wireless internet, kitchenette with fridge, coffee, and microwave in each room, and a seafood store that will steam shrimp and blue crabs to your specification, should you wish to enjoy them along with a cold beer and a glorious sunset on your balcony.

Galleries, shops, beaches, and the free car ferry to Ocracoke Island are all nearby.

For those who want to smoke, have their two Labs share the room, or barbecue just outside the front door, the Breakwater even has'fishermen' quarters at slightly less cost. It's a lovely place to stay, if you find yourself in this nice old fishing village at the very end of the Outer Banks.

What's best? The personal attention to each visitor's needs, the warm welcome, and the pleasant, comfortable rooms.

What's not to like? Hard to say, unless you have a problem with early-morning charter boat departures right beneath your balcony. More than offset by getting to watch the successful return with their catch in the afternoon.
