We had a wonderful time during our visit to the museum. The Civil War artifacts are especially wonderful.

“Interesting small museum on lesser-known history of the Outer Banks”
Reviewed November 10, 2013

This free museum is at the southern tip of Hatteras Island near the ferry to Ocracoke. It has a variety of interesting mini-exhibits on Outer Banks sea-faring history. These include shipwrecks, Billy Mitchell's role on Hatteras, the Island's role in the Civil War, and much more. The exhibit panels have a great deal of information, so there is much reading if you wish to be thorough!

“Unique museum”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

Arrived in the early morning in the rain. This free attraction does not permit photos due to the fragile nature, but do not provide enough postcard options for those who want a memory inside the museum.

Not enough on shipwrecks, was confused on some of the exhibits since they were about life at sea and not shipwrecks. Really like the view of the work area where staff can be conserving items and the storage facility.

Did not see any staff walking around, nor standing at displays. Knowledgeable staff would lend to the museum.

“You get what you pay for ...”
Reviewed October 16, 2013

This is a small museum that is most definitely NOT worth a special trip! Since it's called the "Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum" I expected it to be about shipwrecks ... there is scuba equipment, civil war stuff, bags of chips that washed up on shore, but not much ship wrecks ... at least it was free.

“Some Really Interesting Exhibits”
Reviewed October 10, 2013

We visited during the government shutdown of the national parks, so this private museum was a particularly welcome site. It is certainly worth putting on your itinerary, since there are few of these kinds of things to do on the outer banks, and this one is free! Particularly nice for a rainy day activity. We were impressed with the exhibits, everything from artifacts recovered from shipwrecks to piracy and naval warfare. Great for kids and adults alike.
