I recommend anyone to go to this museum. The best way to learn about this very unique place the outer banks and it is very interesting! The facility is top drawer and the shop has some very nice things to take home
Pretty disappointed with the quantity of exhibits. I am a fan of ships and the ocean and hoped for more. The exhibits they had were nice but the most unique thing I remember is the up to date listing of shipwrecks on the outerbanks with GPS coordinates and directions to find them.
Visited recently for the first time in several years. We were impressed with the additions that have been made. In particular, there is a wonderful exhibit on Hatteras and the Civil War to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. There are several period pieces available for review, as well as information on the USS Monitor which sank off of Hatteras.
This is a great place to visit when the weather isn't great, or if you just want to visit to learn a bit of local history. The museum is free. However, there is a suggested donation which all should provide to support the museum's cause.
What a wonderful museum! And it is free! We stayed on the Outer Banks again last summer for vacation, and visited the museum on our way to Ocracoke Island. We thoroughly enjoyed it, even my 17 year old. The information on all the different pirates and their ships were brought to life here. They have a nice gift shop and restroom facilities - not sure about food available, I didn't notice on our visit. Don't miss a great family outing!
