Tired of the so called authentic "Mexican Food Restaurants"? I have the place for you. "El Azador", is a hole in the wall, nothing fancy about it, if you go by looks...then forget it, but if good food is what you are after...then you are at the right place.
"El Azador" is a family owned and operated little place. Everything is cooked in front of you. Tortillas made to order to go along with the "real" Mexican flavor. There is something for everyone, chicken, beef, pork, vegetarian; just ask, and they will make it for you. Once you eat there, you might not go back to the "chain" Mexican restaurants ever again. I eat there at least once or twice a week.

El Azador has the best Mexican food in the area. It is close to the airport and also downtown on Greene Street. It is close to the Carniceria (meat market) by the railroad tracks heading toward Bethel. The restaurant looks like a small corner store from the outside, and the sign is a fair size, so look out for it or you may miss it.

The food is not only authentic, it is also cheap compared to La Hacienda and Mi Cabana. The food is prepared fresh every morning and is very tender and savory. Nothing is bland or extremely salty like the aforementioned restaurants, although they are bigger chain restaurants. El Azador has a variety of lunch and dinner combination specials all at a good price. I ordered a chicken tamale, rice and beans and paid $2.45, tax included. For lunch, I order rice and beans, carne asada with peppers and stewed chicken for $6.99. The owner said you can have one to three meat dishes, either the carne asada, stewed chicken or stewed pork, with rice and beans, and it will all be the same price. There are also other varieties of food that you can order, to include mojarra frita, fried fish, soups, salads, desserts, drinks, and even an entire cooked chicken. Their side orders are reasonably priced as well. I ordered a side of rice and beans and it only cost $2, compared to the $4 that other restaurants charge for both.

There is a little lady who takes your order and serves your food. There is also a small television and the restrooms are clean. They take cash and credit/debit cards without any extra fees. The staff is bilingual, however, if you call over the phone, they will answer in Spanish. If you continue to speak English, they will either speak back in English or find someone who speaks it to take your order.

I frequent this location at least twice a week, almost. I have a "frequent diner" card and I have never been disappointed by this establishment.
