“Redbuds, Turkeys, Springtime.”
Reviewed January 25, 2014

In the spring of 2012 my wife retired. She purchased a new car. A road trip was in order. So off to the New River and to River House we went. The Creeper Trail is not far. We rented bikes and pedaled up to the trail head and coasted down on a grand cool spring day. There are miles of trails nearby for those of us who enjoy hiking. The proprietor, Gayle, is a charming woman who has had an equally charmed life. Her heart and her intellect appear to have fused in the formation of this pleasant retreat. You can sit on the porch which overlooks the New River. You can drink wine and read a good book. You can have great food in the intimate dining room at the main house. Go out for a stroll, a hike, an all day hump should you be so inclined. If you are looking for luxurious lodging, you may need to look elsewhere. Ours was appropriately aged with a large selection of older books, which I love, and a bed comfortable enough for us. Overall, a great escape for us. Thanks, Gayle.

“Mixed Experience”
Reviewed December 27, 2013

First let me say that I purchased a special deal from Groupon to visit this inn for a getaway for my husband and I. It is tucked away in the West Jefferson area in NC in Grassy Creek. The road to the inn was along the river and once you got to the inn you probably would not want to leave as it was quite out of the way and dark. So we pretty much settled in to have dinner there as well. When we arrived there was no one to show us our rooms, we had to holler back to the kitchen and one of the chefs lead us to what looked like a garage. Let me say that the inn itself is a typical looking two story older home with an interesting history. It was in desperate need of paint and repair. The area behind the inn is dotted with all types of buildings, barns, and apartment style dwellings that have all been converted into rooms. There was no key for our room and once we opened the door the overwhelming smell of mold in the room overpowered us. The room was shabby at best with a dirty throw pillow on the bed and a large hot tub in the room itself and a fireplace but all needed to be updated. What looked like some sort of machine to clear the air and an old fan sat by the tub. Very unsightly. Needless to say we asked to be moved to another room since the room was so dank and dark and not freshened up in the least. We were then taken to one of the out buildings and once inside we were in a room that had old furnishings and two fireplaces and a bathroom with jacuzzi tub that was separated from the bedroom thankfully. Supposedly one of their best rooms?? The bathroom sink was dirty with makeup and hair and once I saw this I was suspect of the cleanliness of the rest of the room. The bed was lumpy and creaky and the furnishings were dusty and very old nothing really fresh or inviting. Now the best part of our stay and the only thing that saved the weekend for us was the amazing cuisine at the restaurant/bar in the inn itself. Service was wonderful, wine list very good and the menu for the night was very good except I suspect that my cut of meat was not actually a rib eye as indicated on the menu. Still the ambiance and the warm greeting from the elderly owners and the staff made up for a lot during our meals there. Did not sleep very well due to the questionable cleanliness of the bed itself, nothing smelled fresh and the room overall. They had a poor cat wandering the grounds that was constantly trying to get in and meowing. It was freezing outside too poor kitty. Breakfast the next morning was exceptional and the service again was wonderful. However we did not drive all the way from Charlotte to eat dinner and eat breakfast. To be fair we were seated in the dining room with a group who said they had been back numerous times and just loved it. So I guess it is a matter of taste. Unfortunately due to the condition of the room, the cleanliness, the musty furnishings, the check in experience, and the overall lack of ambiance we will not be back. Really wish that we could have had a better experience even with the Groupon discount we spent about $250 for room, dinner and drinks, breakfast included. Not an experience we wish to repeat.

“WOW, what a pleasant surprise!”
Reviewed September 19, 2013

We travel all over the country and have eaten at many fine restaurants, including many in Ashe Country and the Boone area. We have often been disappointed by overhyped descriptions, but not at the Riverhouse. The atmosphere was wonderful and the staff (including the owner) could not have been more friendly. The food was superb and the wine list surprisingly expansive (for the area). We thoroughly enjoyed our experience and will certainly return.

“First disappointment at the Riverhouse”
Reviewed August 31, 2013

Not good when you bring guests all the way from Texas to taste the bread pudding and the Riverhouse loses the order.

A major disappointment.

“A lovely step back in time”
Reviewed August 11, 2013 via mobile

I had arranged for a group of six for lunch. The food was delicious and the atmosphere delightful. Gayle has the most charming personality and was quite talented as our hostess and server. Bring your camera for there are many great spots to photograph. The Riverhouse will take you back to a much quieter and peaceful time. I will definitely be back.
