River House Country Inn
Ranked #1 of 1 Grassy Creek B&B and Inns

We came to the River House Country Inn with our best friends for a weekend get away. They had been many times, but this was our first time. We fell in love with the Inn and all it had to offer.
If you are looking for a place with all the modern luxuries such as TV’s, high tread count sheets and modern bathroom fixtures, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for a cozy, romantic, nostalgic, quiet, relaxing, reasonably priced place. This is where you want to be.

And if you want a gourmet meal served in a laid back relaxing atmosphere, you are at the right place.
We had 2 marvelous nights! Gayle and her crew do a wonderful job making everyone feel right at home.

We were scouting for our photo workshop and came across River House Inn and met the owner, Gayle Winston. What a charming lady, and how cleverly she has converted traditional North Carolina mountain buildings into amazIng rooms for her guests.

Great smells came from the kitchen, and the cuisine is much touted. We have friends who stay there often, and they cannot say enough about River House Inn and Gayle. I can see why!

Our first evening at the Riverhouse, my husband said,"I don't know how you found this place but we are coming back!" The setting is so rustic, yet the rooms are so beautiful. We stayed in the Dairy Barn and it was like having our own apartment. The cadre of people we met was amazing, from Ian, the porcelain artist to Emile, the pianist. The young chef is amazing and his wife makes a mean martini!! An unexpected level of sophistication in the mountains of North Carolina. I recommend it highly.

The location is divine on the North Fork of the New River, with enough room to ramble. Cleverly decorated cottages - and then there's the food! Perfectly prepared and graciously served. However, there's no stuffiness. We were there on a Sunday and enjoyed some great music on the porch by a couple from Mouth of Wilson - traditional songs and finger style guitar with a dash of autoharp and tasty hors d'oeuvres. Gayle is a great owner/developer/proprietor and the staff was a pleasure to deal with. This house was my great-grandfather's place in days gone by, so it was a special treat to see how wonderfully it has been preserved and transformed. I'll be back! Also loved Chester the cat.

My husband and I spent a couple nights here last month and by the time we left we were planning our next visit. The place is definitely off the beaten path - sits on the New River and we were able to attend the New River Blues Festival which was held on the property of River House right by the water. The Inn is so charming and each room is uniquely adorned - nothing fancy but so quaint and relaxing. No TV - but a nice big bathtub with candles! There is an artist who creates pottery and his gallery is part of the inn - we bought several pieces to bring home for us and as gifts for family. The restaurant is AMAZING! Excellent food and service. Very intimate. Full bar at the inn and full breakfast in the restaurant. We will definitely be back!

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 1 but I think the best rooms are the Carriage House and the one that used to be a...

Yes... in the middle of nowhere... quietly on the edge of the 'New River'.... Accommodations are comfortable and peaceful... and some are creative. In a county where it is hard to even get a glass of wine.. River House is an Oasis! 4-Star food as well.... The owner is as charming as the Inn... and she is there most all the time....
Worth the trip... looking forward to going back.

Room Tip: just pick one you like.... they are all different.

Once again the River House has been amazing! We always love to stay here, it's the most relaxing and scenic spot! Miss Gail is the sweetest host, she makes you feel like your family coming to stay the weekend. The cottages are simple but very comfortable and the food is always outstanding! Always look forward to going back!!!!!
