River House Inn & Restaurant
Ranked #1 of 1 Grassy Creek B&B and Inns

The River House Country Inn was a gift to us from our home restoration contractor. My wife and I arrived on a late afternoon and we checked into the "Wee cabin" - our own private cabin on top of a mountain overlooking woods and fields. The "Wee cabin" has a large California king bed, a whirlpool tub for two, separate bathroom, gas log fireplace, kitchenette, and a large covered deck with outdoor chaise loungers, table and chairs. The main Inn is down at the base of the mountain and overlooks the river. The front porch has chairs and tables to enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine while waiting for your dinner reservation. The inn has two dining rooms and the meal was absolutely delicious. The steak was tender and flavorful, the bread was fresh, warm, and delicious as well. Needless to say, the creme brulee was out of this world. Sherman and Paula were fabulous (Paula makes a mean dirty martini) and our server was very attentive as well. Back at the cabin, we were entertained by a deer just outside the cabin (appeared again the next morning). I would wholeheartedly recommend the River House Country Inn as a very special getaway. Thank you to Sherman and Paula especially for making us feel welcome and as if we were family.

We had only one night to stay at the River House and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. My husband and I, along with another couple, were in rooms 5 & 6 in the Caretaker's Cottage. #5 has a library/living room with it that can also be accessed by #6 if you'd like, so it was the perfect set up for us to meet and play music, as the one additional room in the cottage (which is upstairs) was vacant. The house kitty was very friendly, but never ventured into the rooms themselves. Room #5 also has a beautiful little porch with two rocking chairs, a table and a wonderful double swing to enjoy the view and your morning coffee and tea. My husband has had dinner here a few times in the past, and raved about it and the great music he's seen there. Unfortunately the dining room wasn't open for dinner the night we were there, but our breakfast was one of the best I've had anywhere. Don't come expecting an elegant room - just clean and comfortable and very cozy. I would love to come back soon!

Very quaint country retreat with friendly hosts and good food.

Room Tip: The weigh station is quite small and cozy with a huge two person tub.

Super friendly, great views. Just sitting by the river is so peaceful. They will let you tour the rooms that arent taken after checkin. It is interesting to see how they use the space and how different each room is, no two room are the same. Great value, because you get sooo much back. Tea or coffee by your door when you wake, 3 course breakfast and a gift when you walk in your room. Super stay. Removed from outside world, or enjoy the small town about 10 minutes from the house. Private shops, little theater and dont forget the cheese factory.

Room Tip: Look at photos on website, pick the one that fits you. We stayed in and loved #7.

Best food in the High Country. However, when I made the reservations, I was offered a picnic dinner for Thursday night. This was offered by the Owner. The day before our visit, the GM called to tell me they didn't do picnics and we would either have to provide our own provisions or eat in the dining room. This was disappointing and the news was delivered with irritation, not apologies.
The dining room food is absolutely excellent. The rest of the staff (other than the GM) is friendly, helpful, welcoming and considerate. Sittiing in the rockers on the front porch prior to dinner and chatting with the other guests is special.
The rooms, on the other hand are dated and tired looking. The decor is early 1980's and the bedding and furnishings have not been updated. The bathrooms were very clean, everything else is just old and dusty. For the price of the room, this was subpar.

Tucked into a peaceful and beautiful country cove, the River House Country Inn combines a gorgeous natural setting with the pleasures of good food, good wine, and good company. We arrived with car troubles of concern, and Sherman referred us to a local shop who fixed us right up the next morning. Only wish we could have stayed for the Blues Festival this weekend!

We spent four nights at the River House (#5) partly to escape the heat. It was wonderful. The staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating. They attend to your needs, but they are never intrusive. In other words, the service is perfect. A pot of coffee was delivered outside our door every morning before breakfast, which was a great way to ease into the day. We sat on our porch, drank coffee, and read until we were ready for breakfast. We then walked over to the main house for breakfast. The food was excellent. We had dinner one evening and it also was excellent. We had considered staying in one of the large mountain resorts, but I'm convinced that the experience can't compare with our time at the River House. It has character (in a good way) that adds to the experience.
