“Historic, County jail turned into a gem museum.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 29, 2013

Great concept. The place serves well as a museum and part of the jail cells are still intact. It smells musty in there and you can almost imagine the prisoners living there. The rock museum is serviceable but not nearly as good as the one at Ruby City so make sure that you leave a good portion of your gem budget for purchasing at Ruby City.

“Franklin North Carolina”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 17, 2013

Franklin is a wonderful mountain town located in western North Carolina. It offers something for everyone. The Gem and Mineral Museum is located right downtown with easy access and parking. It is surrounded by quaint shops offering antiques to coffee, tee shirts to jewelry. The area surrounding the town is full of places waiting to be discovered such as beautiful waterfalls, hidden lakes, flea markets, a fun park, antique malls, and some of the most beautiful scenery around. Try it and you will want to go back.

“Must See Museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 9, 2013

Such a wonderful tour guide and his wife work the museum and my husband and I thoroughly enjoyed the tour. All the details and knowledge the guide had of the gems and history of the area were outstanding. The story of the indian trail of tears will choke you up and he was emotional sharing it. The old jail cell and the black light exhibit of the minerals is really cool too. Ask him to see the geode that he carries around. Its a natural gem inside a stone and I said "how did that get in there?" and because it looked so shiny said "no way, thats a real gem" Its very real and naturally found inside the stone. We spent an extra 30 minutes after the tour just talking and getting to know the couple. Donations are appreciated as you exit the museum.

“A Gem of A Museum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 20, 2013

A Mom and Pop museum filled with all kinds of rocks and minerals and some good bargains to take home. Enjoyed seeing some old artifacts, many from outside the area, but a great little find for the whole family.

Very informative and friendly staff and even more informative special friends of the museum that just happened to drop in while we were there. Great displays and a must visit for anyone that wants information on the area history, sapphires, other minerals and artifacts that can be found along with some interesting gem cutting displays.
