The staff is the one big part of this experience, from the gentleman that sets you up and helps you find keepers, to the more then helpful family run gift shop. These folks were as excited about our finds as we were. When your finished they'll separate your big $ finds from your bag of beautiful gems. No joke we had the time of our lives doing the hardest part, it would not have mattered if our $50 bucket didn't equal $10 it was two hours of pure excitement ! Three of us shared that bucket which produced a dozen Ruby's , a five carrot emerald, and lots more. This was our first time, we had no idea what we really had till we hit the gift shop. These people truly enjoy there business/customers and it shows!!! You won't be disappointed, fun for all ages. Your kid might even forget about ther i-Phone and FB for a few hours and be real people doing real things in the most beautiful part of this country. I live 1,160 miles from Cowee's and will be back ASAP, .............. : ) And they take VISA

My wife and I visited the Cowee Mountain Ruby Mine in late October. It was a little chilly, but we expected that. Because it was late in the season, and early in the morning, we had the undivided attention of two staff members, who helped us identify the stones we found, and find stones we did!

Last year, we visited a similar mine in Phillipsburg, Montana. There, we spent 1 1/2 hours mining, and found about 18 arats of gems, 7 of which were cuttable. We spent the same amount of time at Cowee Mountain, and d more than 200 carats of gems, 45 of which were cuttable. Of this, we had about 15 carats actually cut. We found rubies, sapphires, emeralds, garnet , topaz, tourmaline, citrine, amathyst, tiger eye, and many other gems. We had the emeralds and garnets cut.

I felt the prices were very reasonable... no entry fee, just a pay-as-you-go bucket fee. We bought 1 bucket of salted (or enriched) dirt, for $25, which we sharedop (and we will stop again), we'll get one for each of us. The cutting fee, which varies by type of stone, was also very reasonable.

All of the staff were very warm and friendly. We ended up chatting about family and the area, as much as the stones.

They suggest wearing cloths you don't mind losing, or make plans to change... it's messy work. They have a clean, warm bathroom to change in.

All in all, we both had a fine time. I highly recommend this mine!
