“A thisle in the beautiful forest”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Five couples in Corvettes stayed for 3 nights as we toured the area's scenic roadways. The resort is rustic, at best, and old and in need of updating at the least. It has the smallest, oldest bathroom we have encountered in this century. The weather was cold at night at the end of September and we asked about a fire pit at night and were told it cost $50 by one clerk and $100 by another front desk person. Although there were 15 plus customers in the large area around the huge fireplace, we were told they had no propane so there could be no fire. We ate in the only restaurant and on the first night it was delicious - for all tens of us. On the second night 3 meals were over-cooked and awful. We then skipped the restaurant as breakfast also was extremely inconsistent. The resort is perfectly located and the area is beautiful so it is sad that poor management & oversight prevents this facility - which has so much potential - schlep along with marginal performance.

Room Tip: All of our rooms were similar - higher rooms have better views.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review of your experience. We apologize that our property did not meet your expectations. We are an older property, but work hard to offer clean and affordable accommodations, even during peak times. We strive to please all of our guests, and apologize if your experience was anything less.

Thank you for your comments and I can assure you they help us move forward.

We rented a one bedroom cabin for the weekend to use as a base for exploring the area. The cabin (a mobile home) was clean and basic. It was private and quiet. There was no internet or cell service but that was OK, we were there to relax and enjoy nature. Bring all your food and beverages with you - there's no shopping nearby. The Wildwood Grill was good and reasonable, with sandwiches and pizza and a salad bar. It is a wifi hotspot as is the lodge. We didn't eat at the lodge but the menu looked good. Every staff member we met was pleasant and helpful. The road up to the property was winding and fun to drive in our sports car!

Thank you for your nice review. We are a bit remote, and we like to encourage folks to bring any specialty items with them. The limited Wi-Fi and cell service can make it very quiet and relaxing! It helps families spend more quality time together!

It’s nice to hear that you enjoyed dining in one of our restaurants. They are both great, but offer different menus. This helps ensure there is something for everyone to enjoy!

We hope to see you back soon!

We had a large family reunion here and had an excellent time due in large part to the Fontana Village Resort's amenities and staff. We had family staying in the cabins and in the lodge, and both have their pros and cons. Either way, you won't lose.

My wife, kids, sisters (and one's husband and kids) all stayed in one 3 BR, 2 BA cabin. While the cabins look modern inside, you will still remember that you are in the great outdoors. Get ready to brush some spiders out of the corners of your rooms. Still, it was comfortable and roomy, and suited our needs.

You won't have wifi in your cabin ... you may not have much of a phone signal either. If you want internet, you can hang out at the restaurant, the lodge, or the game room area. Phone signal will be hit or miss, depending on where you're standing and your provider. I have AT&T and just gave up on having phone service that week.

There are tons of things to do at the resort, and there's a good bit more in the surrounding area ... as long as you like being outdoors. If you're looking for shopping, restaurants, etc., you will not have a great time here. Btw, their pizza/grill restaurant is pretty good. The burgers reminded me of Fuddruckers. I heard the pizza was excellent as well. The prices were reasonable, especially for being the only joint in town (except for the lodge restaurant, which was pretty expensive).

We stopped on our way to the resort to stock up on food and water. The nearest one is about an hour away. There is a grocery store about 30 minutes away. There is also a general store on the resort property that sells a little bit of everything, but it would be pretty expensive to buy everything there.

My kids loved the pool area. We had fun on the "baseball" field, although it really needs a makeover as it just begs for a twisted ankle. You wouldn't want to deal with a medical emergency here, as the nearest hospital is at least 35 minutes away, down the winding mountain roads.

One of the things that could have been the biggest issue for my family ended up being a great opportunity for the customer service to shine. We had an incident with a bat that had us believing that we were going to have a big problem with the resort. The initial response to this situation was absolutely appalling. I found a supervisor, who immediately began working to resolve the situation as best he could at that time. A few days later, I was able to speak to the general manager, who actually came to the cabin to find me. She again did everything she could at the time to help the situation and promised that they would take care of everything once it was all said and done. I'm purposely being vague because I don't want this to turn into a review that would scare others away. Rather, I'm trying to highlight that they worked hard to turn a bad response to a bad situation into a great response and restoring our faith in their service. If the initial response were the last thing we heard, this would be a scathing review, but because of their effort in "turning it around", they have redeemed themselves.

If you're looking to hit the great outdoors, but aren't ready to go camping or give up all of your amenities, this is the place to go.

Room Tip: If your cabin backs up to the mountain side, you will get a bit more privacy, but will probably also...

Thank you for taking the time to leave such a thorough review. We strive to give each customer the best possible service we can, and it sounds like you noticed! Thank you for your observations on things we need to work on. Feedback from our guests is the best way we can improve ourselves.

We are definitely remote, so it’s good for folks to plan on bringing specialty items with them. The limited cell and Wi-Fi services are things we are working on, but it’s also nice to completely “unplug” sometimes!

We look forward to seeing you again!

We stayed at the lodge, very nice. We had a king room, was clean and a nice size with a balcony. The bed was comfortable as well. We ate at the Mountview Bistro, the food was good but a little over priced. We also ate at The Wildwood Grill, really good burgers and reasonably priced. We enjoyed our stay and would stay here again.

If there is one thing that stands out at this resort, it is customer service. You can walk in with full confidence that the management will try their best and probably go beyond to make your stay memorable and awesome.

I had made reservations for our family to celebrate our wedding anniversary that coincided with the 2013 Labor weekend. We planned for a 3-night stay and had asked for rooms with good view of the mountains. Our stay and experience met our expectations, but customer service was above par. The Stoney Creek and Lazy River area is really fun, we enjoyed a lot with our kids. Boating on Lake Fontana is a great experience. If you plan on going on a cruise, I strongly recommended you plan well in advance as the seats run out fast. You may also rent a boat for your own use, which is way more fun anyways. The general store was surprisingly well stocked. The ice cream parlor is a fun place, our family went for late night ice creams each evening we stayed there.

A few people that I would like to acknowledge:
IT Manager, Mac.
Property Manager, TIm.
Front Desk - Lance and Kelsey

Room Tip: If you plan to stay at a lodge room, make sure you reserve a room in the main lodge. They are better...

We have stayed at the RV campground at Fontana Dam many times, but this year, we stayed at the Lodge. We were working there for a semi annual dance event and this year they put us up in the Honeymoon Suite. It was clean & comfortable. The bed was great. The daily cleaning was a bit spotty. One day forgot coffee. Once we got skipped totally. Called to ask for service and they had already left for the day. But over all it was a nice place to stay and the area is beautiful. Food at the restaurant was great. They had daily specials that were quite reasonable and very tasty. Service there was great too!

Room Tip: The Honeymoon suite was very very nice.

We chose this place due to a Groupon that was offered. I had been wanting to visit the area, so this was a good deal. I will start with the positives: we stayed in a King Room, and the rooms are very large, both In length and width. We had a nice balcony, and it was clean; the lobby is beautiful, and the staff is very friendly and helpful. Now the negatives: the room smelled musty, and I could have sworn that the carpet felt damp ( we figured that this was due to the elevation/clouds); the hallway in the lodge was not very well lit; we used the stairwell a couple of times coming in from the outdoors, and it made me think of a parking garage stairwell; the only restaurant available on the property was the one in the lodge, which was also the most expensive one ( the only other thing available within a 45 minute drive was the Deals Gap Grill about 10 minutes away, which is basically a biker joint, but clean and friendly, and the food was a good value and good); activities cost extra, and the equipment was very old and in bad shape; the railing on the balconies in the lodge rooms will NOT keep a small child from falling out ( we did not have one with us, but I wanted to point that out. It really should be addressed, and I'm really surprised that it meets code). If you have a family with kids that are under the age of about 15, and you want a place that you can just go to and not leave for a week, then this could be the place for you. Rent one of the cabins. Just make sure you stop at a grocery store on the way in, because it is a LONG way to town on VERY curvy roads. And bring your own sporting equipment. There is NO cell phone or internet connection there except in the lobby. You are definitely out there in the boonies! But you do have everything you need.
