“Not luxurious, but great for families”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

I have been to Fontana four times in the last fifteen years for my husband's family reunion. The new owners have made many improvements in the last ten years. The staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable of the area. We did have to change rooms after check in due to the tub not draining well, but had no problems with our new room. The Lodge is an older property (1975-ish) . The rooms are very clean and ours had new beds, linens, and bathroom fixtures. Due to the mountain location, the TV reception is not always great, but you don't come to Fontana to sit in your room. There is no cell service in Fontana, so make sure you leave the Lodge number with a neighbor back home in case of emergency. The lodge rooms are very economical for a short trip, but if you are staying longer the cabins would be a better option so you would have a refrigerator for food. No matter where you stay, you will enjoy the beautiful scenery!

The facilities at Fontana are very nice. There are two pools, one of which has a small lazy river. There is a nice disc golf course, fire pits, and other outdoor activities. The lake is amazing! Renting a pontoon boat is worth the money for a day on the lake. There are great hiking trails, including the AT. We have two kids, six and eight, and they enjoyed some short hikes, canoeing on the river, and taking the pontoon boat for the day. Tim at the front desk was very helpful in directing us to some places in the area that our kids would enjoy. This was our best trip to Fontana so far and we look forward to visiting again.

Room Tip: Some of the cabins are a long way from the pools, etc. They rent golf carts, but if you have small...

Fun fun fun! We had the opportunity to stay here for one night recently and enjoyed it. Nice get away location tucked away in the mountains. Enjoyed the pools and ice cream shop! A peaceful place with many kind people providing good service. The lodge has a nice restaurant with a view that is simply refreshing. Only down side was we went there to do some biking and the trail we rode was not fully maintained. Not sure if they are maintained by the hotel or someone else but some work was definitely needed in some areas out there. Room was spacious although bath could be a little bigger. Other than that, it was a great time.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view!

Thank you so much for the nice review! We are so happy that you enjoyed your visit with us. Unfortunately all the rain has really done some damage to the trails in our area. Hopefully they will get cleaned back up fairly soon if the weather cooperates!

We hope to see you back real soon!

When I visited Fontana, I was there on a mountain biking excursion. Let's just say everything EXCEPT the biking was great. The service was nice, the rooms, while nothing special, weren't bad (but I was in a room, not a cabin), and the grill could probably beat longhorn ANY day. Also, they have two pools, one with a lazy river and loads of tubes (it's even local to the ice cream parlor!), apparently mini golf, and a lobby that is great for just hanging out or working. The mountain biking, well, I hope we chose the worst course. Some tough-ish climbs, and you could go on a connector trail to the others, or continue. We continued. Oops. After a long while of cliffs and rock gardens, there is creek crossing and.... It just ends. The path is there, although the hotel REALLY needs to send a maintenance crew out there. Otherwise, the whole place is great! If you are not a biker, you'll love it. (If you have one, bring your MINI car. Go to the grill to learn about what I'm talking about.)

This resort is a throwback to many years ago. The room we had was clean, but the fixtures were very old. The walls are pretty thin, and we could hear people talking next door to us. The resort seems to promote a sort of environmental awareness, but the toilets are the old kind that use lots of water. I may sound fussy, but when you tell me you have a certain attitude, you should follow it. While the area is nice, the restaurant options are very limited. I'll cover that with my reviews of the ones we went to.

While there is no danger of getting a Michelin star this resort is never the less a very good location for a family vacation. We rented a Willow one bedroom cabin which started life as a modular (i.e. mobile home) unit with a faux log cabin skin. The cabin was located in a park like setting with reasonable spacing between units. The area was beautiful and peacefully save for the occasional passing mechanized army brigade (it might have been a pack of motorcycles, it’s hard to tell the difference).

The resort has several playgrounds and two pools (one general, one at the lodge). The kitchen was adequately equipped for cooking in the cabin but we also ate out at the grill (lunch and dinner, hamburgers and such) and the restaurant in the lodge. Our food in the restaurant was very good (and priced accordingly but not overpriced) with excellent service at both places.
While we did not stay in the lodge a tip for parents with children that will spend most of their time in the pool- You can get rooms that open up on the pool courtyard where it is very easy to keep an eye on your kids but have easy access to the room.

Free review of the marina- We were staying the area to go boating on beautiful Fontana Lake. The nearby marina was a modern, clean facility (in stark contrast to some of the other marinas on the lake). We were able to dock our boat there which made it very easy to take the boat out for the day without having to launch and retrieve. If you plan to dock your boat you may want to call ahead and reserve a space as they don’t have that many transient slips. If you did not think to bring your boat you can still get out on the lake on “Miss Hazel” (a large pontoon boat). You can go out for a tour or have them take you up Hazel creek where you can get out and hike for the day in the GSMNP.

We were here for the 4th and while the weather did not cooperate with all the outside activities that the Resort had planned, they were able to improvise and move the fireworks display from Thursday to Saturday and Saturday ended up being a perfect night for it! From Katidy in the Wildwoods Grill to my favorite bartender, Zelerie, the people at Fontana Village are so friendly and work hard to make your stay as relaxing as can be!! Another awesome aspect is the opportunity to meet people from all over which we did! We have nothing but high praises for this destination and are trying to plan to go again next year and stay longer. Looking forward to it already! Maria and John Harvey

We stayed in the same Willow cabin on the same dates twice in the past two years, and enjoyed both stays. The accomodations aren't plush, but are comfortable and have a great old timey resort feel. The village has an interesting history as a camp during the building of nearby Fontana Dam, and some of that history is still evident in the large restaurant/recreation building particularly. We enjoy the resort for its proximity to world-class hiking, as it's near one of the most remote areas of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park as well as other national forests.

The Willow cabins are small modular homes/trailers, with comfy front porches with rockers to sit in and absorb the view. We make good use of the cabin's kitchen and fridge while we're there. There's not much in the way of TV reception or internet, but that's not what we go for. The resort offers sufficient amenities (restaurants, groceries, pool, putt putt golf, boating) to provide all you need for an enjoyable time in this beautiful area. The food in the restaurants is really quite good, and there's a bar where the guests can mingle. Meeting the Appalachian Trail through-hikers who are taking trail breaks is always interesting.

One word of warning, though -- if you stay in the cabins, you need to bring your own shampoo. They provide soap, but not shampoo for some reason. Given the room rate, this was an annoying disappointment.
