Owner description: This area was orginally developed because of transportation needs. WE are at the mouth of the Cape Fear River. This museum tells that key to our history plus lots of interesting tidbits, like a 1950's gas station, info on hotels - steam boat travel, etc.

“Great place to learn about Fayetteville local and transportation history.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 29, 2012 via mobile

My wife and I have visited the Transportation Museum on several occasions to tour the various exhibits. We regularly visit the farmers market there on Saturday mornings as well.
The museum has several permanent exhibits about Fayetteville transportation history that are very informative and well put together. The museum is split between the main building which is an old train station and an annex where some larger displays are kept that include vintage autos and some local military transportation exhibits. Both buildings are worth a look for people with an interest in local history. I have also enjoyed some of their special exhibits. My favorite was an exhibit on local Fayetteville banking and financial services history. It was probably a little dry for the casual observer of financial history, but I enjoy such pursuits and found the displayed local currencies, bonds, and ledgers rather fascinating and informative. Even if the history of local banking doesn't intrigue your thoughts, the place is still a great resource for local history with both its permanent transportation exhibits as well as its special limited engagement pieces.

Great depiction of how it was back in the day. Nice diarama's of the area. Not enough parking. Beautiful station/building.
