“Clean and Private”

Wasn't overly impressed but was definately satisfied. Can't beat the location. Clean, private area with a good level of pricing. Overall was pleased, it's a quality place. Only downside is the beds we were in were like rocks, but that could be condo specific.

We stayed in the Sound of the Sea Condominiums in the West Building (which is closer to the ocean) and has fantastic views of the beach. The condo was clean, large and well-equipped. When we arrived, we found that the balcony door did not lock. We called maintenance and they arrived within 15 minutes and were friendly and helpful. The only "complaint" I have about the condos is that the towels/washclothes provided feel like sandpaper! I don't know if it's because they are worn out of what, but they were extremely uncomfortable especially on skin that got some sun! So I would suggest bringing your own. Other than that, we had a wonderful time and would definitely go back again. The condo unit is gated for security and the beach is beautiful and uncrowded. The condo is in good location with a shopping center within walking distance. There are restaurants, movie theaters, mini-golf, etc. very close by. Also, regarding restaurants, I had looked at past reviews for some good recommendations. We tried El Zarape (mexican) and The Crab Shack (which was recommended by some locals). We were disappointed by both so I would not recommend either. The best place that we found was Portofinos which is an Italian place. It was good but not great, but better than anything else we had found. Overall, we highly recommend the area -- it's absolutely beautiful and relaxing!!

My husband and I just returned from a week at Sound of the Sea #104North (1 bedroom unit). We found our unit through vrbo.com. The condo complex was really nice – great pool (2, actually), showers by the beach, gated entry, plenty of parking and easy access to the beach (maybe 2 minutes). It is also located across the street from Food Lion and other shops and restaurants.

The beach in Emerald Isle was really nice and the beach at this property was not crowded at all. We went out a couple days after lunch and were still able to get a nice spot.

I’d definitely go with a condo over a hotel, in fact I’m not even sure if Emerald Isle had any nice hotels.

My family is used to European vacation apartments, and this one (415W) fit the bill. Two generous sized bedrooms, a well-equipped kitchen, 2 baths, WiFi, elevator, laundry in the apartment, and a good view/ breeze from the balcony. What more could you want? We didn't bother with the extra $ for the beach front, as the complex is angled so that all the apartments have a good breeze and good view, at least if you are 3rd floor or higher.

My only reservation is that the doors are thin, and we could hear our neighbors. We couldn't hear them through the walls, just if they were right outside our door. But other than that, everything was perfect. This apartment even had puzzles for rainy days and an umbrella that we could borrow. We cooked and had everything that we could have wanted.

This is our second year staying at Sound of the Sea in Emerald Isle, NC. We stayed in the west high rise building in unit 312W. Last year we stayed in 211W. Overall we are very pleased with the condos we stayed in and the complex itself. This is a gated community, so only residents or guests have access using a keycard to open the auto gate. Once you are in the community you have access to the beach (short walk over the dunes), the pool and the tennis courts. We spent most of our time on the beach. We would bring several beach umbrellas (don't forget the sand drillers to hold them up in the wind), beach chairs, and sand toys. The kids love to play in the sand, jump the waves, and boogie board. The beach area in front of the complex is for Sound of the Sea residents only, so it is much less populated than many other beach areas.

The swimming pool was nice too and includes a building with restrooms. The pool was big enough that we didn't feel overly crowded, and has a deep end (8 feet) that the older kids like. There is no diving board (in fact no diving at all).

As far as the condos go, last year is SOS 211W we had a 3 bedroom 2 bath condo. This year we stayed in the 312 West unit and it was a 2 bedroom 2 bath unit. We have three girls, and both units were plenty large enough for our family. The 2 bedroom had two twin beds and a trundle bed so all three of them had a real bed. I recall that both of these condos were nice, but neither was as well equipped as the condo our friends stayed in (202W). Their condo had a larger kitchen table with more chairs and more deck chairs. We were fine for our family, but any get togethers with our friends had to occur in their condo because they had more seating.

The buildings themselves are well maintained and look nice. The only thing really that could have used attention was the elevators. They were a bit old and dirty upon arrival, but about mid week there was a cleaning crew there cleaning them.

Just FYI, there are two WEST high rise condo buildings. The condos numbered from 101-106, 201-206, 301-306, etc, are closer to the ocean. The condos numbered 111 - 116, 211- 216, 311-316, etc, are closer to the pool. Both years we were in the building closer to the pool, so we had an extra 150 yard walk to the beach everyday. In the buildings themselves, the higher numbered units are closer to the beach. So the units closest to the ocean are 106, 206, 306, etc, the next closest are 105, 205, 305, etc. Same is true for the other building... 116, 216, 316, etc are closer to the ocean while 111, 211, 311, etc are at the pool end of the building.

Every condo has a great view of the ocean and you can hear the surf from the deck, so it isn't really that big of a deal which unit you are in. We have found that some units are rented through GMAC Bluewater Realty and some through Emerald Isle Realty. We have only rented from GMAC. Note also that some condos are Saturday-Saturday and some are Sunday-Sunday.

We visited Emerald Isle during the last week in June 2006. Our family of 5 (2 adults, 3 children - ages 16, 14, & 5) had a fantastic time @ the Sound of the Sea condominiums. Sound of the Sea is a medium-sized condo complex. Security is good with gated access to the complex and private beach accesses. There are restaurants, grocery store, theaters, bookstores, miniature golf, and all the other conveniences necessary to beach-goers located just minutes away by car, bicycle or walking. The condo itself has tennis courts, large outdoor pool, and large open areas, not to mention outstanding beaches.

We had a beautiful oceanfront condo in the West Tower. The unit we stayed in had 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a family room, dining room, full kitchen, washer/dryer, 2 televisions, vcrs, dvds, cd/stereos, and a host of other features. The unit had phenomenal ocean views from the main family room area and from the master bedroom, and had balconies on both. The unit was well-appointed, with elevator access to our floor.

For the time being, Emerald Isle seems to be a well-kept secret in the "Crystal Coast" of North Carolina's Southern Outer Banks, but the tourist volume is likely to increase as more and more visitors visit the beautiful beaches, warm and inviting waters, and sample the wonderful restaurants and hospitality provided by the local population.

We strongly recommend Emerald Isle and the Sound of the Sea condominiums to couples, families, and anyone looking to find a beautiful, untrammelled ocean vacation spot.
