“A Superb B & B”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

My husband and I have stayed in many B & B's, but this one was very special. Vidal and Georgene were gracious hosts. The house is the oldest in Elizabeth City but it has been lovingly and tastefully restored. No Victorian frou-frou, just elegant and comfortable rooms. Our party of 5 took over all the available rooms. We spent an hour or two in the afternoon on the front second floor porch drinking complimentary wine and beer. With our hosts' advice, we explored the town and had a wonderful dinner at Sydney's. When we returned to Grice-Fearing house Vidal and Georgene presented us with a delicious home-made dessert and invited us to sit in their garden.
Our breakfast was also top notch. If you're passing through Elizabeth City - stay here!

From the moment we arrived Georgene and Vidal made us feel welcome. Warm smiles, a friendly hand with bags, a folder containing information about the house, our own personalised welcome board containing breakfast details and to cap it all a wonderful glass of wine 'to help us relax'. It was five star class all the way. Our room ( the king size Fearing Suite) was delightful. Spacious, clean and with a wonderful sitting room and elegant bathroom, it met all our needs and then some. Vidal offered helpful advice on local restaurants for dinner and we found a dessert waiting for us on our return. Wow! Coffee was provided outside our room in the morning to help us start the day before we headed downstairs to the beautifully appointed dining room for the most wonderful breakfast we have ever enjoyed. Gourmet with a capital G and impeccably served by Vidal. We sat for over an hour and half enjoying the food and sharing travel stories and experiences with our hosts as well as learning about the local area and the house itself. Very discreet music playing in the background added to the elegant ambiance. We were only passing through but will definitely be coming back to the area with a return trip to Grice Fearing House an absolute must. Thank you for providing an outstanding B and B experience.

My family pulled into Elizabeth City around 6:00 after a long trip from Charlotte, NC. We were warmly greeted at the door by Georgene and her husband, Vidal. You know when you meet people and you instantly like them? Well, these are those people...you'll know what I mean when you meet them (which, in case you're wondering, I hope to convince you to do).

They didn't linger over introductions but didn't push to get us out of their hair either. Vidal ran us through how the B&B operates, gave us all the information we needed on local restaurants (pointing us to a great one), and invited us to breakfast the next morning (which was spectacular). As we were guided to our rooms, I began to take in all the personal touches, from the special note with our names on it to the breakfast menu that was handed to us (with an option to change). In/around the room were other touches - coffee/tea/ice in the hallway and bathroom amenities I'd be surprised to find in the Ritz. You can really tell they care. It also helps that on the way out, the upstairs trey was filled with some home-made sweets...just for us. Wow.

Yes, Elizabeth City is close to the Outer Banks, but it's awash in history and has character that the beach just can't match. Were I to decide which to choose for a vacation, I'd got with an extended stay at the Grice-Fearing and trips to the coast.

Room Tip: If you don't make time to spend with the owners, Georgene and Vidal, you're doing yourself a...

My family enjoyed our stay at the Grice-Fearing House last month - the house is beautifully restored! Being the oldest house in Elizabeth City, the original rooms in the front of the house have settled giving the rooms a slant which is quite charming! Breakfast was very good and very filling - nice ambiance. Georgene and Vidal were the perfect hosts!

The Grice-Fearing House is the best bed and breakfast experience we have had in over 25 years of staying in B and B's. Georgene and Vidal Falcon's friendly welcome made us feel like old friends immediately. This was only the beginning of their hospitality which was reflected in the immaculate, comfortable suite with its king bedroom, sitting room and spacious bath as well as their entire home. Every detail was tastefully provided. The Grice-Fearing House has been restored with impeccable taste and care. Guests are encouraged to enjoy the elegant parlor, the library with its cheery fireplace and the sunroom with a garden view.

My wife and I have stayed in dozens of B&Bs in the USA and Europe. Among all those accomodations, there is no peer for the Grace-Fearing House itself or the two wonderful persons, Georgene and Vidal, who own and operate this superbly elegant two-suite B&B. It is special to stay in a home that is 215 years old, yet is up-to-date with all the comforts and conveniences that can be found in today's world. I wholeheartedly endorse the comments of HildeQ922, who stayed on March 7th for 6 days in the same suite we had the pleasure of occupying for 2 nights, March 4th and 5th, 2013. At breakfast after our second night, I commented to my wife that I felt as though we were royalty being hosted in an elegantly decorated town home. We left feeling as though we had made two new friends in Georgene and Vidal. I must mention also the delightfully soothing music playing in the background each morning as we breakfasted.

Each day of our six-day stay we were treated to absolutely delicious gourmet three-course breakfasts. Early morning coffee was right outside our door as were each evening's sweet treats! Our conversations with Georgene and Vidal at the table or other occasions were a highlight of each day. Elizabeth City was centrally located to explore and enjoy a variety of day trips- Edenton, Outer Banks, Virginia Beach, Dismal Swamp as well as immerse ourselves in the life of EC. The Museum of the Albemarle is a gem as are the galleries and shops in the downtown. We were fortunate to participate in the monthly First Friday ArtWalk. Everywhere we were greeted with true Southern hospitality and charm. It is truly wonderful to know that the Falcons and their home await us for another special visit, We only wish they were closer!!
