This museum is worth making the hour or so detour off US17 to get a view of coastal North Carolina life and history. Great, modern, spacious museum with excellent exhibits and very good self-guided signage. This covers early settlement, revolutionary period, antebellum, civil war, industrial revolution and civil rights. Also, very interesting insights into Coast Guard developments because of large, long-standing local coast guard station. This is one of the best US locally focused museums i've visited. And it is free. Definitely worth taking an hour to see and taking the time to get off the highway. However, it is the only thing worth visiting in Elizabeth City which is otherwise a gritty coastal town like so many others with nothing else to uniquely endear it for the visitor.

Working with our friends at the MOA is always a pleasure; the staff is well organized and the education programs are well received. The exhibits are top-rate and always well done

wow what a lovely surprise. just visited this charming little museum in elizabeth city n.c. while my wife was at work with a project for the state of nc.
the museum recreates the areas birth to present day with many wonderfully preserved artifacks and reproductions. they are accurate and extremely well written about the area and focus on all interesting facts that grew the area and its peoples lifestyes commerce business religion and some well transcribed accounts of the civil war and its effect on the area.
overall an educational and enjoyable two hours of sights and information. this museum deserves many accolades and visitors passing thru this little city must stop and enjoy what has been portrayed here . NO CHARGE FOR ADMISSION BUT IF YOU DON'T LEAVE A DONATION YOU SHOUD BE ASHAMED OF YOURSELF
