To avoid turnover traffic in the Outer Banks on Saturday, we now spend Frday night at the Hampton Inn in Elizabeth City. We leave PA after work and arrive late in Elizabeth City. We were greeted by a friendly young lady at 10:00 PM and immediately made us feel welcome. Arriving late and tired it was a relief to have a friendly face and a room waiting for us. Our room was typical Hampton Inn and nothing fancy, but clean, comfortable, and quiet. For anyone wanting to avoid the traffice on Rt. 12 it's a reasonably priced hotel and saves a lot of stress on your first day vacation. The breakfast is free, light, and lets you put something in your stomach before heading to OBX where you can have a fresh catch lunch at one of the many restaurants while you wait to get into your retal house.

We arrived too late to explore the area, but have become somewhat familar. There are a couple restaurants within walking distance of the hotel and several chains a short drive away. We traveled with our 2 grandkids this time and had two beds. My husband is 6'5" and the bed seems more like a full than a gueen, but for one night I can fight for my share of the bed.

Room Tip: If you're tall you may want to confirm the rooms with 2 beds are queen size and not full.

Just here Thurs. June 14/15, 2012 We have stayed here a few times when coming to ECSU to visit our kids and have not been disappointed yet. The rooms have always been very clean, updated and very cozy. The pool and poolside were very inviting and well maintained also. The dining area and breakfast was simply amazing; factor this in when you consider the price to stay here; you will not need to go out for breakfast. Lots of food options for breakfast and a comfortable space to enjoy it in. THE BED: I wish I could have rolled it up and took it home with me!

The only critique was that the person checking us in did not provide an initial receipt when we paid up front and failed to disclose that an additional $20-25 charge would be assessed on our credit card (later refunded once confirmed that we had no additional charges to the room).

Room Tip: Being at the end of the 2nd floor hallway put us directly accross from an exit downstairs to the par...

This was our second time staying at this establishment, and it was very good. The first room we had, seemed a little musty and the front desk immediately changed us to another room just down the hall which was a nice perk. Breakfast in the mornings consisted of Sausage, ham, or chopped sausage links, home fries, and omlettes, as well as the usual offerings of bagels, waffles, etc. The Pool on our visit was closed due to renovation, but that was ok, as it was a tad too cool to be swimming. The restaurant selection within a mile is also very good with Golden Corral right next door, Ruby Tuesdays, and a few small mom and pop establishments, and a Little Caesar's Pizza as well.

The only downside to staying in the Elizabeth City area is the lack of in town entertainment. There is a single bowling alley, and we never did find a movie theater. So unless you are in town for the Potato Festival, another city celebration, be prepared. The Outer Banks is only a 45 minute to 1 hour drive, which isn't terribly bad, and OBX has some great restaurants as well as family entertainment. This hotel will always continue to see my business when I am in the Elizabeth City area.

Room Tip: Watch prices on the travel or hotel search sites, as they can vary wildly from week to week. Also on...

i have been staying at this hotel for over 3 years now and i have never had a bad stay. the staff is first rate! they treat me like royalty. 1 visit and you will see that customer service is at the top of their list. their rooms are great, the price is right and they are a short drive to the outer banks or the Virginia beach area. i have stayed in most of the hotels in this area and the outer banks and they are the best by far! this is the only place for me!

Room Tip: all rooms are great. never had a bad room

under $100 a night prices, clean rooms, decent continental breakfast every morning , right off the main drag. Made my visit to the Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills area one that didnt cost a fortune. Granted I had an hour commute but the savings more than paid for the extra gas.

Clean, well managed, friendly, I can't say enough about the Hampton Inn in Elizabeth City. My husband and I spent three nights there. They had a great breakfast each morning and dinner (free) each evening. I will stay with Hampton Inn again. Great experience.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
"Any port in a storm" is an old seaman's saying, but if you're actually caught in a storm, try to make it to the town that surrounds our Hampton Inn® hotel in Elizabeth City. Why? Well, first of all, we're a harbor that offers a huge array of services. You'll find shops, docks, stores, and restaurants all along our waterfront. And second? We're home to the United States Coast Guard. They're just six miles from the Hampton Inn hotel in Elizabeth City. While you're in town, make sure to explore our gorgeous neighborhoods. Many boast Greek Revival, antebellum, Italianate, and Victorian homes and businesses. Those who love golf will find championship links within just a few minutes of our hotel in Elizabeth City. Lastly, if you pull into our town by boat, don't be surprised if you're greeted by a friendly welcome party complete with roses. It's a long tradition here in town-started by two private citizens in 1983 and continued by Elizabeth City's "Rose Buddies." It's yet another reason why we think you'll agree that the Hampton Inn hotel in Elizabeth City is in the friendliest harbor on the Eastern seaboard. ... more   less
