“Lovely views from the deck.”
Reviewed July 10, 2014

The volunteer staff is friendly. But as historic buildings go, this one is nothing special. We looked around for a bit but in fact, it's just an old building.

“Much history, beautiful view”
Reviewed June 23, 2014

Spent only a short while in Edenton at the beginning of summer. I had heard how beautiful it was and had an hour to spare while returning from a business trip so I stopped in.

Edenton, and the Barker House in particular, is truly charming. The house is redone in period furnishings and overlooks the Albemarle Sound from nearly every window. At its front door is the ancient lighthouse (on stilts, of all things), that is currently being refurbished. For the Barker House, it's all about the view and the history. The historic, downtown street that leads to the Barker House is charming as well, and of course there are the usual restaurants, ice cream parlors, ladies' boutiques, other historic homes to tour, and the like. I highly recommend a few hours walking around this charming place and taking in a good meal. Oh, the Barker House is free and volunteer historians are happy to answer your questions and show you around.

“A lovely house to visit.”
Reviewed June 7, 2014

This lovely house on the Edenton waterfront is almost the archetypical image one has of the superb little town. It has been beautifully restored by volunteers who also maintain the building, run the gift shop and act as guides.

We met a lovely lady called Ann who told us all about the house then left us to wander at our own pace. This included sitting for a little while on the rockers on the upstairs balcony taking in the lovely views and simply relaxing. As far as I am concerned, no trip to Edenton would be complete without a visit to the Barker House.

“Beautiful setting”
Reviewed May 30, 2014

The location of this home/visitors center is beautiful. We were looking for idea's on where we could go to launch a kayak. They had no idea and sent us to the dock master. He too had no idea. As it turned out not 2 blocks from the Barker House was a kayak launch. So we felt like they could have had a bit more knowledge on the area seeing its not all that large. We also booked their trolley tour. Really enjoyed the trolley. But we had to hunt down someone to buy the tickets for and it seemed we were interrupting their conversation with each other. But having said that, keeping in mind they are all volunteers. They have a small gift shop, and another room with books for sale.

Do recommend the trolley ride it lasts for about 1 hour. They told us a lot about the homes in the area. It is very worth the $10.00. If you keep your receipt you can get $3.00 off the boat tour. Now we never did go on the boat tour, it is 45 mins long but its times were not with what we could do.

“Lovely staff, beautiful building, interesting history”
Reviewed May 29, 2014

Walking into the Barker House, you're immediately greeted by a friendly volunteer ready to serve your needs whatever they might be - tickets to the great trolley tour; information on the town; a brief explanation or an in-depth look at what makes the Barker House famous; an unsual gift to purchase; or even where to find a "necessity room", these volunteers are well-trained and happy to help. Spend some time sitting on the back porch overlooking Edenton Bay and get to know the place and the people that make Edenton special.
