“A great German, and other place, to dine”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 26, 2012

The woman who owns this fabulous restaurant , formerly with a business partner, has built an UNBELIEVABLE loyal following. They, I believe, had a marketing evaluation done , when they were still in Austria, and choose Durham to start this, at first just a Bakery, now a great restaurant PERIOD. I have never been disappointed ...and I do have pretty high standards. It is NOT a candle and white table cloth venue, but who cares.

“GREAT place for lunch, brunch, coffee, or dessert”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2012

I end up here pretty frequently for lunch and have never been disappointed with their food. it does get pretty crowded at peak hours, so it can sometimes be hard to find a table and take a little longer to get your food, but the atmosphere is great both inside and out. i got one of their cakes for my parents' anniversary, which the whole family loved. their other bakery items are great too. i almost always bring any out-of-town visitors here whenever we are looking for a good weekend brunch.

“Fun and Casual”

Went for lunch. Sandwiches and salads for our group, everything was tasty and fresh. Stop by the bakery for goodies to go.

“Great German café off the beaten path. Delicious food and drinks, but a bit pricey...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012 via mobile

Found this place on trip advisor. Went here based upon it being number one in Durham. Was certainly not let down. Once I finally found the place, I was pleasantly surprised to be seated promptly near closing-time. I had a delicious bourbon mixed drink which was awesome! They have housemade bread complementary, and the Rye bread is deliscious! Had the local goats cheese salad it was fresh and tasty! Had another bourbon mixed drink and once served my entrée at an appropriate time. Certainly enjoyed my entrée, which was the sweet potato maultaschen. Absolutely wonderful! Had pecans and Gorgonzola. The service was excellent, prompt, and not overbearing. Would definitely go here again if in Durham, and can find the place…

“Really excellent food, but the service not so much.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 8, 2012

This place enjoys a reputation for spotty service, and dreadful parking, but the food keeps the place full. Great entrees, fresh baked bread and an outstanding beer menu are great strengths. Long waits between visits from the server is the biggest obvious problem. Best advice I can give is be patient in the parking lot and prepare yourself for a meal set at a European pace and you'll have a great time. Until they get serious about service, though, Guglhupf will be a four dot spot.
