Description: Piedmont Restaurant has cultivated a loyal following by creating an adventurous, seasonal dining experience in the heart of downtown Durham. We shine a light on foods harvested and raised in North Carolina, including from our sister farm in Hillsborough, Coon Rock Farm. Chef John May’s inspired cuisine showcases local ingredients in classic Southern dishes, reimagined with an inventive spirit. Our regionally focused craft cocktail program, North Carolina craft beers, and extensive and award-winning wine list designed by Crawford Leavoy complete our modern farm-to-table experience.

Because the portions are just the right size and you want to lick the bowl after dessert (pear pie with ginger ice cream). Knowledgeable wait staff is always a plus, and the folks here were attentive to our wide age range (9-67).

“nouvelle southern”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

Downtown Durham. Good street parking.

Spartan interior. Exposed brick. "Industrial chic." Acoustics to match.

Service lackadaisical.

I went with my 87 y/o mother. She had beet salad and the flounder. I had pumpkin soup w crabmeat and the duck breast. Hers was pretty bland. My two choices were tasty, well prepared.

Coffee indifferent.

“Very tasty food.”
Reviewed September 4, 2013 via mobile

Recommended by a foodie friend. The flounder was excellent as were the starters, tomatoes and cheese selection, and the dessert. Paired with some local beer. Pleasent airy restaurant promoting local food and farmers. A very good rastaurant, pity not enough time for a second visit.

“Amazing Freshness!”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

One of our best food experiences! We were in Durham a week, and ate here twice! So fresh...
Flounder one night, and Cobia the next time....both were outstanding!
The wine recommendations that we received from Crawford were excellent!
He was very helpful and friendly!
Will definitely be back here anytime we are in Durham from Arkansas!

“Outstanding!”
Reviewed August 13, 2013

Arrived without a reservation at 6pm on a Monday night and was initially concerned that the restaurant was completely vacant. However, it turned out to be a treat to be the only diners for a short time (other diners began arriving at 6:15). For starters, we shared a cold corn soup and a plate of heirloom tomatoes wit fresh mozzarella and basil. The soup was one of the best dishes I've ever tasted--cool, creamy with an intense corn flavor. It had a fresh corn salad and barbecued shrimp as garnish. The salad was a but spicy and a nice contrast to the soup. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. On the salad, the tomatoes tasted as if they'd just been picked. For entrees, we had the flounder and beans and rice. The fish was light, delicate and perfectly cooked on a bed of fresh corn, green beans and okra. The rice and beans was served in a ring with a parsley coulis in the center--a really stunning presentation. The beans were tiny and fresh corn was also mixed in --a lighter interpretation and wonderful vegetarian dish. And on top of this, the service was excellent.
