I was looking for a place to stay while my son was at a Duke University football camp. I found The Blooming Garden Inn listed on the Durham Convention & Visitors Bureau website via a link on the Duke website. I checked their website for information regarding accommodations and it looked nice so I made a reservation for a two night stay. Upon arrival to town, I visited the area before checking in and found it to be very undesirable, unsafe, and precarious, especially for a lone traveling person. There were many people hanging out on the streets, boarded up windows in adjacent houses, and what appeared to be low income apartment housing across the street - what I would call the edge of the ghetto. I believe they are trying to redevelop the area but it just hasn't happened yet. I chose not to stay there due to my anxiety, insecurity and lack of confidence about my well-being. After talking with several local people about that area, I felt reassured that I made the best decision.
