Attraction details
Owner description: Located on Duke University's West Campus, Duke Chapel is as magnificent in structure as it is rich in ministry. Construction of the Chapel was begun in October of 1930 and completed two years later. During that time students continually congregated at the stonemasons' huts to watch the Chapel take shape. It was first used for Commencement in 1932 and was formally dedicated on June 2, 1935.Duke Chapel continues to be a Christian church of uniquely interdenominational character and purpose. Through its tradition of inspiring worship and music, and a calling to walk with people of all faiths and circumstances, Duke Chapel acts a beacon of grace on campus and in the community. All are welcome to take part in worship, learning, dialogue, and service.

“Awe Inspiring”

If you're on campus you have to make time to see the Chapel. The architecture and stained glass are magnificent. It is quiet and peaceful and there is a person inside to answer any questions. A truly magnificent Cathedral. Don't miss seeing it.

“Children's Christmas Eve Service”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

We were walking around Duke campus near the Chapel on Christmas Eve and heard bagpipes. Thinking it might be a wedding we wandered closer to see. Turns out we were ten minutes to the 2:00 Christmas Eve Children's service so we went in. The chapel was beautifully decorated for the season, the program was simple but well done, and it was a thrill to hear the pipe organ. The children's parade around the chapel at the end of the service was adorable. Glad we stumbled upon it at the right time!

“Magnificient”
Reviewed December 29, 2013

The Duke Chapel is constructed in the image of the Old World cathedrals. The gothic architecture gives one the feeling they are standing in a great church in France or Italy. At Christmas time the Church is beautifully decorated in Christmas items. Well worth visiting. Be sure to grab a flyer at the front door describing all the figures and statues.

“A must-see building”
Reviewed December 24, 2013

Every time I am in Durham, I go to this stunning place. It is one of the most majestic Gothic cathedrals I have ever encountered, both in and outside. A site not to be missed!
