Our go to place for brisket, smoked turkey and BBQ. We usually get take out. The servings are generous and the food tastes great.

I was impressed by the variety that this place offers. I went with my kids and we tried the smoked turkey, pulled chicken and beef brisket. Portions were generous, but not obnoxiously large. The winner of the three meats was the smoked turkey. It had the perfect amount of smoke falvor and was still quite moist. As for the others: the pulled chicken was good, but was slightly oversauced for my tastes; the brisket was tasty, but a bit dry - adding sauce helped though. I'll be going back to try some of their other items. They are sure to have something you like and is the kind of place where you might have to try it once or twice until you find what suits you best - they have a lot from which to choose! Try them out, I think you'll like it.

Dropped by Q Shack for takeout the other night as my family was craving barbeque. It was early and just after Thanksgiving, so no line! We got the chopped pork, chopped chicken and sliced beef brisket with several sides. All the meat choices were tops. Moist, tender and full of flavor. The brisket was so tender, it could be cut with a plastic fork. I like that they include plenty of sauce with the takeout orders and both kinds (tomatoey and vinegarey). Hush puppies were just ok. We had potato salad, green beans, French fries, and coleslaw as sides. All were fresh and flavorful, particularly the potato salad and coleslaw. Service was prompt and friendly.

Every town should have a place like the Q. Picnic tables, meet-your-neighbor seating, a roll of paper towels on every table, and a kitchen that serves up the local BBQ with skill, tradition and pride. This is North Carolina, so the local Q is a super-moist, flavor-rich pulled pork with a vinegary base. We also tried the chile-rubbed beef brisket--which was nearly Texas in its tenderness. On the table you can choose from two sauces--either the vinegar-based sauce that defines North Carolina BBQ, or a thicker tomato-based sauce that's not really thick at all, and that delivers a nice bit of kick. (Plus, they offer some extreme hot sauces in case you like to sweat while you eat.) The sides are North Carolina Proud: super onion rings, a proper mac and cheese, pimento creamed corn, even the creamed spinach was good, and of course hush puppies for everyone. And this being the sweet potato state, gotta have some sweet potato tater tots.

The Q Shack is worth the trip. Their pulled pork is just that much BETTER. I can't tell you how many places I've been where they focus on the sauce but ignore the meat (it's embarrassing). The Q Shack is the opposite ... they obviously focus on the meat first. Oh the sauces are good--don't get me wrong. But you really have to start with a great pulled pork or BBQ brisket. It makes all the difference.

Hints? The address makes it look downtown, but it's really not. In fact it's really easy to get to, and there's a big parking lot. OK, expect the parking lot to be full. Park across the street if you have to.

The half-pound "plate" is just too much food for some people. The third-pound "sandwich" is a nice alternative.

If there's a line, be prepared to order quickly. This is not the time to be dawdling.

They do have some seating indoors. Vinyl chairs, formica tables, and everyone is walking past you. ... No way. ... Sit outside, at a picnic table. If it's cold, they run the heaters.

Bottom line: Wow. This is heaven for a BBQ lover. And by focusing on the most important part of the BBQ (the meat), the Q Shack is a solid worth-the-extra-trip winner.

Hope this helps!

I took some guys from up north who were traveling with me for some Southern BBQ.

The restaurant is down home and the food was very good. They have many types of BBQ from chicken to brisket. There are many sides to choose from and all were good.

If you are looking for BBQ in Durham, I highly recommend the Q Shack.
