We completely enjoyed our meal. The fried okra appetizer was a great start. The meal was delivered at a comfortable pace. Unusual and creative dishes. We highly recommend Nana's

Everything about Nana's is a treat: the ambiance with wonderful paintings by a local artist, the soothing colors on the walls, the various small dining areas, and most of all: THE FOOD. We have always loved what chef Scott Howell has done but this was our best meal of many we have had at this fine restaurant. The osso buco was meltingly tender, and the greens 'n' beans which accompanied it were perfect. The pork was paired with a creamy sauce which exquisitely accented the seared meat. If I had five thumbs, they would all be pointing "up" for the pate appetizer, which was simply heavenly. The coffee was HOT (always a touchy thing for me, I hate lukewarm coffee) and the creme brulee was absolutely textbook: warm and crispy on top, cold and smooth underneath, with a gorgeous crown of fresh berries. Personable and professional service, too. The prices are not ridiculous at all for the quality of the food. Nice wine list with many choices by the glass, which is always welcome.

Parking is a bit problematic, but mostly because so many patrons seem to have gone to the "if there isn't a legal parking space available, just make one up" school......the lot was extremely hard to navigate. But don't let a little thing like parking keep you from experiencing one of the finest restaurants in Durham. Excellent in every way!

Scott Howell's prowess as a chef and restauranteur seems to have reached full bloom in his Fall 2012 tasting menu. Our table of four enjoyed it yesterday evening, with the wine pairings.

The menu has 5 courses: 1) NC crab salad with marinated asparagus and Osetra caviar; 2) Roasted Scottish salmon with tomatoes and basil; 3) Risotto with BBQ lamb, lobster mushrooms, and shaved parmesan; 4) Grilled Kobe flank steak over baked polenta with sweet red wine garlic jus; 5) Chocolate molten cake with cantaloupe sherbert. Servings were appropriately sized -- enough to savor but not to sate, and the wine pairings were exactly right. Service was prompt but not rushed, and we were never tapping our fingers wondering where the next course was.

We have had another tasting menu at Nana's, at last year's benefit for the Duke Cancer Patients Support group, an event that always (justly) sells out quickly. The fare in that one was a little more exotic (wild boar sticks in my memory). Howell is always pitch-perfect when it comes to herbs and spices and "sauces" -- I use quotes because none of them are the kind of thick sauces found in more traditional cuisines. They are more broth-like and certainly much healthier!

The only thing I would ask for to improve the experience is a listing of the paired wines with the courses on the menu. I always look upon meals like this as having an educational component and learn most permanently by seeing things written out.

A memorable meal.

Visited with my daughter and a couple of her friends and we really enjoyed dinner here. The food was superb (duck breast) although I am not convinced about the fried okra that comes with several of the appetizers - not realy crisp enough and oily. Service was friendly, good humored and attentive, and decor is bright and comfortable without being pretentious.

Visited here on a busy Saturday night. The service was very professional and right on point at all times. The appetizers were excellent, but large servings. You may want to split one if also having entrees. The scallops and the swordfish entrees were excellent. White chocolate and peach mousse was also very good. I would not call it a very romantic restaurant as the seats are very close together and the lights are bright, in order for the older clientele to read the menus. It is very worthy of their high ratings.
