I like Donuts. I have fond memories of Dunkin' Donuts back in the day when each shop had bakers who actually made the donuts and one could go in at 3:00 in the morning and watch through the window as they toiled making the treats.

Those days are gone, but Rise is here now! Praise the Foodie Gods (James Beard would love this place.)

Their daily variety is incredible and each bite is yummy. Red Velvet Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting, Trace of Gluten with Cinnamon Sugar, Banana Pudding, Death by Chocolate, Creme Brulee, and M&M. Biscuits are just as well represented: Creamy Mac n Cheese with Bacon, Sloppy Joe's, Fried Green Tomato and Pimento Cheese(you can add bacon to this bad boy) and Roasted Butternut with a Pepper Relish and Arugula.

RUN don't walk, and get there early. Located in an upscale strip mall (never thought I would write those words), the setting is a little off-putting but parking is ample and the treats are worth the wait (which can be lengthy, demand is high.) You will not leave disappointed.

8:00 in the AM and the place is packed. Have no fear. Take your number and in a minute or two your order is taken. Get your coffee and chat with the other patrons (if they are not glued to their smartphones). In five to ten minutes more your name is called and you are on your way to a delicious, if not terribly healthy breakfast or lunch. On my first visit I had the country ham and egg biscuit and a creme brulee donut. The biscuit is high and flaky and not as salty as nearby Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen's. The ham was real country ham and the egg was right off the grill. Really delicious. The donut was a revelation. It was filled with pastry creme and covered in an incredibly thin sugar coating just this side of burnt that had all the snap and crunch of a regulation creme brulee. I'll be back.

There are plenty of chain donut shops around and plenty of chain fast food restaurants that offer biscuits. Rise combines the two and provides great options for those seeking something sweet or savory. Althought it's only been open a short while, word has gotten out and it's not unusual to see lines out the door at lunch. It would be one thing if they offered mediocre food, but our family sampled several donuts and biscuits (and even the mac and cheese) and found them all to be very good. They take a simple concept and execute it very well. Seating is very limited, it's more of a take-out setup. But worth it for very good food. We'll be back to try out more of their seasonal creations.

I was blown away by Rise's chicken biscuit with honey and jalapenos. Words can't completely describe how delicious, but I'll try. The biscuit was light and flaky, the chicken, brined overnight was tender and juicy, the peppers added just the perfect tangy, hot complement to the sweet honey. I highly recommend it for breakfast, lunch or snack. Oh, and the donuts rock too!
