Loved the little tapas plates and the atmosphere was great. We enjoyed a sweet Sangria made with white wine which I highly recommend if you prefer fruity/citrus based wines. We shared several plates such as the beet/arugula salad, egg/cheese tart, pan con tomato, spicy garbanzos, patatas bravas (yum!) and a cheese plate containing some delicious cheeses especially the manchego variety that they had. Can't wait to visit this place again!

I've been here for a large group and also with small groups of friends. The atmosphere is really nice but it's pretty dim. It's a great date spot. The upstairs private room is great for functions. The actual tapas are a mix of Spanish food and local delicacies. For instance, the second time I went there was a fried chicken special. The first time chicken pot pie empanadas, which were amazing. The specials are hit or miss. Lots of wine choices!

This place exceeds my expectations for tapas outside Spain. Reservations are highly suggested as Mateo's is now super popular. We tried seven plates and all were tasty. a wonderful experience.

We were lucky to get reservations here on a very busy weekend in Durham and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Many interesting options on the food & beverage menus; easy to find something for every palate and fun to share the food with our group. Casual decor & a relaxed feel to the whole place. Very efficient service that gave us plenty of time to enjoy the meal - only wish I hadn't had appetizers earlier in the evening (elsewhere) because I would've liked to try some pintxos too. That'll just have to wait until our next visit to Mateo!

A convivial atmosphere, knowledgeable servers, excellent libations and food -- no wonder it is difficult to get a reservation! But once you are there, you are not rushed. Food comes out at a nice pace. There were four of us, and we shared eight tapas and two pixtos, plus 3 desserts. Yes, we were full! But what an enjoyable 3 hours! The garbanzos were addictive, the stuffed dates were just right to wake up our taste buds. My faves were the chicken croquettes and lamb kebobs (daily specials), along with the albondigas and, believe it or not, the blood sausage. the smoked trout Russian salad was okay, but not much trout taste. The mussels were good, but not on a level with other restaurants. The grilled sardines were excellent, I heard. So the only miss for me, strangely enough was the Spanish tortilla. First, the size was miniscule for $5, and the flavor was just not there. 3 out of the 4 of us have had the dish in Spain, and this wasn't close. The flan was tasty, as were the churros (ask for honey) and bread pudding. The beer selection was excellent, and the red sangria was too--not sweet like you so often find in the US, despite having some cheer wine in it! Overall a great time. Total food tab was $114, drinks added another $60.
