“Gourmet food at sandwich shop prices”
Reviewed November 19, 2009

What a great addition to the downtown durham restaurant scene. My wife and I go to Toast whenever we are downtown for a show or movie at the Carolina Theatre, and the food is consistently delicious. We are not usually fans of "order at the counter" places but the atmosphere feels like a "sit down" restaurant at a fraction of the price. Last night we shared two crostinis, a panini, a bowl of soup, and a dessert ,and had a beer and a glass of wine for just over $25. The flavor combinations are unsual and wonderful and there are always great daily specials. We have been probably 10 times and have never had the same soup twice.

I would recommend Toast to anyone who is tired of cheap bland food and chain restaurants but doesn't want to spend $100+ on a gourmet meal. Toast is the best of both worlds!

“Gourmet Italian Sandwich Shop”
Reviewed October 20, 2009

Funky storefront space in downtown Durham. Specialty is gourmet Italian sandwiches (panini, bruschetta, etc.), many with interesting combinations of ingredients; soups and salads as well. These are not huge heavy meals, which was exactly what we were looking for. Can't beat this place for the price.

“Great place for a light pre concert meal.”
Reviewed February 19, 2009

This is a simple, Italian inspired restaurant that features grilled panini, bruschetta, and crostini as well as some cold sandwiches. I ordered a grilled panini with soppreseta, fontina cheese and arugula. It was grilled perfectly to a crisp exterior with soft, melted, hot interior - just how a proper panini is done. Some of the combinations in the sandwiches sounded so good I found myself writing on a piece of napkin to try at home. I also had a bowl of risotto soup with parmegian-regianno cheese that was delicious and comforting on the chilly rainy night. The one poorly executed item was the desert of ricotta cheese and nutella in a tart shell. The flavors were nice, but the dish too dry making a sip of water necessary to get each bite down. The staff get an A+ for friendliness and service.
