My wife and I booked two nights at the Brookwood Inn because of its proximity to Duke Hospital, where I was having some tests. When we checked in, I was told that our reservation didn't exist, and that "Carl" had checked us in for April instead of March. The response I was given was "well, that's just Carl, and you're lucky we aren't booked!". I overlooked the mistake and went to the room. 30 mintues later, a sweet old lady was outside our door trying to enter with her key. I opened the door and told her that we had just been given the room, so she went back down to the front desk. 5 mintues later the girl at the front desk called and wanted to know how many nights we had been in the room. I informed her she just checked us in, and she told me (with no apology for the call) that the manager hadn't forgotten to check us in properly. The next day, I returned to my room after 4pm to find it hadn't been cleaned yet. When I asked the girl in the hall how long she might be, she yelled "I'm the only one out here! I have to clean this whole floor!" Needless to say, it wasn't the best experience. When I return to Durham, I will definitely find somewhere else to stay.

If you have to have something done at Duke Hospital this is a good place to stay. Within walking distance so you dont have to pay for parking. Have a little resturant inside, free shuttle service.

Stayed one night while friend was having surgery at Duke. She paid for hotel and breakfast with her card.

BEWARE OF EXTRA CREDIT CARD CHARGES!
The only time I used my credit card was for dinner. When my credit card bill came in, the
correct charge was on the bill for dinner.....BUT...I had 2 other charges - both transactions about 4 days after I had stayed there when I was hundreds of miles away back home.

Hotel is OK, restaurant is awful!

I stayed at the Brookwood Inn the nights of November 1 and 2 because I had an appointment at Duke Medical Center and I was traveling from 350 miles away. Its definitely not a luxury hotel. My bathroom, however, appeared to be newly remodeled and was quite nice. The room was very clean and each double bed had four comfortable pillows on it. The staff was very helpful and went out of their way to accomodate me. The downstairs restaurant was pretty basic and the food only adequate. At best I would call it "comfort food". I solved the problem by eating at the food court of the main hospital building, which was a 5 minute walk away and had food that was tasty and a good value.
I would not recommend this hotel for a tourist visiting the Raleigh/Durham area. However, its location makes it perfect for someone using Duke Medical Center or people who accompany him or her to the Center. It is literally in the middle of the Medical campus. Its a 5 minute walk to most buildings and about a 12 minute walk to the farthest building. Even better, the hotel provides shuttle service (delivery and pick up) for those who can't (or dont want to) walk. It also provides free parking, which is a distinct advantage considering the cost to park is $1 per hour in all the Duke parking garages and lots.
I'm going back this week for more tests and will be staying there again.

I recently stayed at the Brookwood Inn by Duke Univeristy. It is really by the entrance to the hospital but the campus is so large that they rather close to the Scince Drive part where I needed to go. The room was basic but clean and they have a dinning room on the first floor. High Speed is still not availiable in the rooms and I don't care for dialup but they do offer a better connection in the business center although the computers are not as fast as the one I usually use.

Overall nice experience and a good price. BTW, they offered a good discount after they found out I was visiting Duke.

We booked a room for July 8 at the Brookwood because our son was having surgery at Duke. When we arrived, we were told no reservation existed. When I produced a confirmation number, I was told the reservation had been erroneously entered for June and a no-show fee charged to our card. We were given a room and assured that the charge would be reversed. One month later and no fewer than 8 phone calls to the general manager, and I was rudely told that the charge would be credited. I would strongly advise against giving this hotel access to your credit card. The staff seemed unable to competently handle any sort of problem and the general manager was of no help. The hotel itself is old and basic. The advantage is its proximity (walking distance) to Duke Hospital. On our next stay, we will be trying the University Inn which sits next door to the Brookwood. Truly, I have never had such a difficult experience with customer service at a hotel.
