Barrier Island Station - Duck

The first week of April, 2010, we were given the gift of a time share vacation at Barrier Island Station - Duck. We were excited until we read the reviews. So many reviews were bad that we were afraid of what we'd find. To our great surprise, we found the resort to be excellent. Our unit was very clean. The beds were comfortable. The resort was clean and well cared for. The staff were friendly. Obviously, the unit that one stays in could vary greatly and the week we were there is not a busy time, meaning that we didn't compete with a crowd. Nonetheless, the unit we were in was excellent and we enjoyed the resort's amenities. It is a family resort and not a 5 star hotel (thus my 4 star rating), so the bed coverings and furniture are not luxurious. But it was very much in keeping with other beach-front condos we've stayed in. Our unit had 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, divided among two floors. The kitchen area was ample. We had an excellent vacation.

We have stayed at Barrier Island Station three times on our visits to Duck. It is a bit older, but still fairly nice. The ongoing maintanence shows, but the place could use some zing! The rooms are clean, but dated. The pool is nice, and we spend a good deal of time there reading and relaxing in the sun. We have been very comfortable staying here and will do so again. All-in-all, a pretty good stay. And, the Sunset Bar and Grille is directly across the street, and well withing walking distance. Or, park near the offices and walk from there. No driving the roads after a few cocktails necessary.

Room Tip: The pool is near the beach. Ask for a room near the pool if you plan to spend much time there. Oth...

We just returned from a week long stay at Barrier Island Station at Duck Beach. Our reservation was made online through Hotels.com. We booked a two bedroom suite for five nights and paid in advance, however when we arrived to check in, Barrier Island staff informed us that they had no record of our reservation. Eventually, they found our reservation but claimed the information on our confirmation differed from the info they received from Hotels.com. They did not have a two bedroom unit available. They were able to put us into a one-bedroom suite for the first night and then gave us the keys to a second bedroom the next day. We were told we would need to pursue a refund through Hotels.com. and that they would make a notation in their system. They implied that hotels.com was notorious for botching reservations but that they would do their best to accommodate us. They told us to contact Hotels.com when we returned home and we watched the staff make a notation in their system. I called Hotels.com promptly the day we returned and hotels.com contacted Barrier Island Station. Barrier Island Station insisted that we had been given the two bedrooms for our five night stay and that they had no record of any problem with our reservation. Without any record, Hotels, com told us we had no recourse. Fortunately for us, we were able to make do with the one bedroom until the two bedroom became available, but if this had happened to a larger group or if the two bedroom had not been available at all, our vacation would have been ruined. Hotels.com offered to give us a $50 refund, even though I am certain this was not their error to rectify. I'm not really concerned about the money. Barrier Island Station knew this would be the outcome and they knew they were at fault. They knew we should have called Hotels.com immediately, but they dissuaded us from doing so. Please learn from our mistake and call the agency who made your reservation immediately if there is a problem with your reservation. This experience overshadows the general experience of our vacation, so I will just say that we will not return to Barrier Island station in the future.

We read many mixed reviews on this property. The unit we stayed in was very clean but needs some updating. If you are going to be staying inside and wanting luxury maybe this isnt the place. If you are going to be outdoors or on beach then it is perfect.

The reviews of this place were so bad I was a little worried. BUT....we had a blast! The pool area was great, the indoor pool was also nice and we were right on the beach! Who could want for more. We had 8 kids and 4 adults and we loved it! There were activities, but we did not participate. We were not far from the town of Duck and would walk down into town several nights. When you leave the the resort, right across the street is the sound and there were beautiful sunsets to see. We were very happy with this resort and hope to return next year! Shame on the people who wrote bad reviews, this place was wonderful! We had a two bedroom with the lockout and it slept 10 total and had 3 bathrooms. The kitchen had enough of everything and cooking was easy.

This is one of the few timeshare resorts in OBX that has (3) bedroom units. Granted they are 35 steps up (no elevators) but roomy and very comfortable. Even though they have been gently worn, the suite was very clean and welcoming.

This is an older resort, so there were some minor maintenance issues, but our 3 bedroom, 2 bath 8 person unit was clean and comfortable. It was a two story unit, so this wouldn't be ideal for people who have problems with stairs, but for us it was perfect. All three couples got their own bedroom and there was a nice living room, dining room, and kitchen for my mom to cook in. There aren't many activities to do, but honestly, if you chose to stay at this resort it's because you want to go to the beach, not hang around the complex. They do have a nice outdoor and indoor pool and a small playground for kids, as well as shuffleboard and tennis courts. They have a private beach access on site, which you can walk or drive to depending on what unit you are staying in. Our unit had a washer and dryer, which was great for doing our laundry before going home, but also meant we had no towel exchange and had to wash our own towels. Also, there was no mid-week maid service, but that didn't bother us.

Our biggest complaint was that the windows only had venetian blinds, no curtains, so the sun would pour into our bedroom in the morning. My husband and I like to sleep in on vacation, and the sun was so annoying we eventually hung extra blankets over the windows so we could sleep in. Also, the floor boards above us were super squeaky, so when my parents, who are early risers, go up, we could hear them walking around upstairs. There really was no "master suite." The upstairs bedroom had a queen sized bed and bath with a whirlpool tub, but no tv in the bedroom. One of the downstairs bedrooms had a queen bed, shared bath, and a tv. It just struck us as kind of odd how those bedrooms were set up.

Despite that, we had a good time and we'd go back and stay here again.

Room Tip: Ask for a unit close to beach access.
