Every detail was attended to - from the excellent coffee served fireside in the morning to the exceptionally clean and well appointed room to the awesome food and the beautifully maintained grounds. The location allows quests access to a glorious stretch of beach as well as some private areas for cycling or hiking. From the moment we checked in until we departed from the driveway we felt that we were treated with the utmost respect. Every employee seemed to strive to make certain our stay was memorable - and they succeeded beyond our expectations. Although we are not "beach" people, we are already planning our next trip to the Sanderling in the fall simply because of the wonderful experience.

We just returned from one night at this hotel. It was our first time. We stayed in a king deluxe room in the North Inn. It was a very big room with 4 windows(dune view) and table and chairs.....very clean and well appointed.Bathroom was perfect, bed was heavenly. We slept like babies.... very quiet.. it was sunday evening. We had a refrigerator cleverly hidden under the tv....we stocked it with yogurt and bread and jelly for breakfast and there was coffee in the lounge.
I highly recommend the Blue Point Bar and Grill which is right down the road in Duck...Make reservations... it was first rate but casual. Service and food phenomenal.
I plan to go back soon!

This resort is just that. Check-in to check-out, the experience was very nice. The service was excellent at the restaurants, the spa, and at the front desk. I really got a feeling of being spoiled the entire time. The maid even folds down your bed at night. The location is excellent, also. You are only five minutes from the heart of Duck and maybe twenty from Nags Head. If you like to stay away from the crowd, but still be able to enjoy some commercialism, than this is the place to go. Highly recommended!

My wife and I had an exquisite experience staying at the Sanderling. We stayed in a cheaper 1st floor room in the North Inn, and it was still plenty luxurious for us. Our room was a short stroll, maybe 30 meters, to the beach. From our bed, we could hear the waves crashing and watch the seabirds gliding over the dune that separated us from the ocean. The bed and shower were both splendid. Even the room service cuisine was good and relatively inexpensive. For modestly-priced beach resorts, The Sanderling is quite elegant.

Also, my wife is somewhat discerning with regards to spa treatments, and she greatly enjoyed her facial and pedicure. She thought they were absolutely worth the relatively modest prices.

However, our experience might be better than average, because we went the first weekend of spring, just before "the season" officially begins. This had some great advantages:
1) We got an amazingly low price, which made us more disposed to appreciate the small touches of luxury.
2) The weather was unusually fantastic for this time of year. Clear skies, warm breezes, simply perfect.
3) The Duck beaches were empty, which made the whole experience feel more exclusive and special. On a gorgeous Saturday, with a high in the 70s, there were 4 other groups of people in a stretch of beach spanning a couple of kilometers. So we basically had complete privacy.
4) The restaurants were also mostly empty, which for semi-foodies like us meant that we could make same-day reservations at good/popular restaurants.

There are a few downsides of going at this time of year:
1) The water is cold, like unbearably cold. We are more readers and loungers, but if you want to swim, this is not a good time.
2) Many of the restaurants had not yet reopened for the busy season. Again, this didn't bother us, because there were plenty of good restaurants (e.g., Blue Point, Roadside) still open in Duck.
3) Some of the tourist attractions and activities are not yet reopened. So if you want to go para-gliding, for example, you may be out of luck. Of course, the water would be too cold for that activity anyway.
