“Wonderful Fall Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2011

We were at the Sanderling last week; arrived on 10/05 for 4 nights. What a wonderful experience, the only thing that could have made it better would have been if we were on the 3rd floor instead of the 2nd (ocean front, with a better view). The place is wonderful, and the amenities went right along with it. The Left Bank and the Lifesaving station restaurants were top notch and the Paper Canoe (across the street, but not owned by the Sanderling) could have not been better.

Room Tip: If you want ocean front, be sure you get 3rd floor in the South Inn

We could not have asked for anything better while stying in the outter banks. It was our first visit there and it made a great impression on us. The room and accomadations were super clean and the carpet padding made it seem like you were floating most of the time when waliking down the halls. The restaurant at the inn was incredible also...I think our best meal on the trip. Would recommend in an instant.

Just got back from our week-long honeymoon at the Sanderling. Have vacationed in OBX for years, but always rented a house. We wanted to be treated during our stay there. We had a Main Inn Oceanfront room, and the views were spectacular. Make sure to ask for a 2nd floor room, I doubt you'd have a view of the ocean on a lower level. There is a large balcony that overlooks the Sandbar. When we booked our room, we were given the option to have a large glass walk-in shower or a tub-shower. We chose walk-in, but upon checking into our room, realized they had given us a tub-shower. The front desk staff quickly was able to make the changes, and the bathroom in our new room was beautiful! Afternoon tea/cookies is a cute idea, but the iced-tea left a lot to be desired. The staff here is very friendly and polite. We booked the "Special Occasions" Package which was $300 a night and included a couples massage at the spa. Their spa is alright, but the spa staff seem to need some more training. All spas I have been to in the past have been quiet and relaxing. The staff here clunk around loudly and don't even bother trying to talk in a low tone-of voice. It was a treat (for us) to stay at a resort like this, but our next trip we will be renting another house.

Lovely resort. Although it looks weathered on the outside, the rooms are beautiful. We had to call maintenance twice b/c our AC was not working. They arrived promptly both times but could not fix it. We were moved after the second visit. We loved the service at the Sanderling. Everyone was very welcoming and helpful. We ate at the Beach Bar and the Lighthouse Station. The gal at the beach bar makes awesome drinks. Food at the Lighthouse station was delicious. We had a terrific breakfast and ordered room service for dinner twice. Service was prompt, cost reasonable, and food terrific.

Room Tip: Our first room was in the north inn street side. Our second room was on the lower floor of the north...

We travelled to the Sanderling on a Monday morning. Weather had been terrible and the forecast didn't look promising. We didn't care we just wanted to getaway. We'd been to the Sanderling two years ago and had a great time. Service is very attentive and personable but not overbearing. This trip was no different. We stayed in the North building, second floor ocean front. While you didn't have a great open view to the water it was still lovely. We walked the fifty yards to the beach pavilion almost every evening and thoroughly enjoyed the view and our pre-dinner wine. Late September is a lovely time to enjoy the Outer Banks. Theyre plenty of good restaurants in Duck. We didn't have dinner at the Resort because we found Canoe just down the road.Having been in the restaurant business, we appreciate good food. Canoe has been open less than a year and does some amazing things. The first evening we had a Fresh Swordfish that was one of the best Fish entrees I 've ever had. Three nights in a row is something we never do because we love variety. This was truly the exception. So now I've written two different reviews. Enjoy the peace and serenity this time of year because you won't be overwhemed by the crowds.

My husband and I were attending a 3 day conference at this hotel. I was scheduled for meetings every morning, and my husband was along for the company. We were excited because the website advertised that there were fitness amenties available at a nearby Raquet Club, and similar fliers were present in the room advertising such availability, yet when we enquired at the front desk, we were told that the Raquet Club was not available to guests at Sanderling, only to "residents" (whatever that meant). So why were such statements on the website and in the room? When the flier was shown to the front desk personnel, they very sweetly smiled and apologized profusely for the confusion, and confiscated the flier. No further explanation offered. They apparently had no idea what the flier was doing in the room and could not explain why the website clearly offered Raquet Club access.
They apparently were very well trained in smiling sweetly and apologizing but offering no service or explanation, because we encountered this twice more on our 3 night stay. The conference meetings were being held at the conference center at the resort and were scheduled to end at noon. Checkout was at 11am. We asked at check-in whether a late checkout was possible for noon so that my husband would have somewhere to stay until I was done. Staff looked confused, smiled sweetly, and said that she would ask, and that we should check back with the evening staff. We did so, got the same response, except that we were to check back in the MORNING. This went on for the entire stay (3 days), with no one able to give a simple yes or no answer (this is all we wanted!). Finally, at 8am on checkout day the front desk grudgingly gave my husband permission to use the room for an extra hour. He then went out to get breakfast, and came back to the room at 10 am (an hour BEFORE normal checkout time) to find it already broken down and all our belongings missing! He then had to chase down the cleaning staff and regain all of our belongings (books, food from the fridge, jackets, change of clothes, etc). When he reported the issue to the front desk, again they were all smiles and were "so sorry for the confusion". Third time hearing the same excuse, offered no resolution, we wont be back, especially for this kind of money.

Thank you for posting your review on TripAdvisor. We apologize for any confusion or misunderstanding. The Pine Island Racquet Club is owned and operated by the Sanderling is located 3 miles north of the resort. The fitness facility is complimentary to our guests and there is a 25% discount on court fees. There is also a small fitness center in the South Inn that is complimentary to our guests. This information is on our website and in our guest rooms.

There is a fitness facility and tennis courts across the street which is part of the Sanderling POA. SInce we are in the Sanderling Community our guests do have access to these facilities but there is a fee associated with their use. There is no information about this on our website and nothing that the hotel has put into the rooms about these amenities. Again, we apologize for any incorrect information communicated and hope this explains further.

We spend a weekend in September at this hotel and despite the weather being terrible the hotel was very nice. There were three of us and we rented a suite room that was two levels. An upstairs with a bedroom and bath and a livingroom/dining room with a pull out sofa. If was perfect for my me, my husband and my sister. The only complaint I would have is that the kitchenette area had no utensils -- cups spoons or anything. All in all, pricey but nice.
