Upon recommendation of our kayak tour guide at Coastal Explorations we got take out barbeque here and it was awesome! The ribs, pulled pork and chicken all were very good -- especially with the hot sauce. The sides were all very good too - tasty coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans and the best corn bread I have ever had. (It was actually more like a sweet cake than the dry corn bread you get at some places.)
The only place to eat here is some picnic tables under shade trees, or your car. (You will be tempted to eat as soon as possible because the odor of delicious barbeque hits you as soon as you approach this place.)
We were able to feed a family of 5 for about $12 each and everyone was very satisfied. They also have a cool selection of drinks (including Grape Nehi) and soft serve icream cones for dessert (chocolate and vanilla or twist only).
So glad we followed the advice of the locals and ate here. Again proving my point that the best barbeque comes for the humblest looking buildings!

Get your BBQ sandwich with slaw and texas pete and you will be amazed. The vinegar based NC style sauce is tangy and doesn't have monster amounts of pepper/pepper flakes like some of the other places around here. They started using wood chips again so the pork has a nice pink smoke to it and it really shows. I do wish they would change the menu a little since it has stayed exactly the same for years (at least since i started going here in 2005). Give us some more options like mac & cheese or curly fries!!!

I am leery of reviewing this restaurant for fear of attracting more people to this hidden gem! It was the best find for a nice low key dinner at OBX. The people could not have been friendlier! The food was plentiful, well priced, and great tasting. The ambiance was quiet, cute, and Low key. Expect picnic tables, outside dinning, a wait for food, and no table service. Seriously, that is what adds to this places overall ambiance. If eating there, be prepared for the usual picnic guests like flies and mosquitoes. You can get it to go like we did and take it back to your beach home and pool. This will be a family trip staple from now on.

We enjoyed a wonderful dinner here! My family had the ribs, pulled pork sandwiches, and pulled pork platter- with sides of coleslaw, mac salad, and potato salad. We suggest ordering the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on it- it is delicious! It is just a counter that you can order from, so we enjoyed our meal at the picnic tables under the shade right outside the BBQ Shack. There was a lot of take out happening the night we were there!

BBQ Quick Tips:
1. NO indoor seating area whatsoever!
2. TripAdvisor photos perfectly show the small service area of this ‘BBQ shack’
3. Parking lot was a large lot that seemed to be shared by the surrounding shops
4. Limited hours: 1030-1700
5. Order at the window; orders came up quickly
6. All drinks were bottled only; no soda fountain
7. All orders are made ‘to-go’ although you can eat on site at their picnic tables
8. Good number of picnic tables are situated under a large shady tree; clean-up after yourself
9. Bug Potential!!! (although on our visit, we were thankfully bug free)
10. Cash/Credit Cards

I ordered a large serving of their Carolina Barbecue; EXCELLENT!!! The sides that came with it were ‘eh’…potato salad was swimming in mayo and the candied yams tasted straight out of the can. The accompanying cornbread however was also excellent; very moist.

I would return for the bbq and try a few different sides; but for the most part, this is an exclusively pick up your bbq and get your sides from somewhere else place for me...

The Currituck Lighthouse is just around the corner.
