“A New Favorite - We'll Be Back!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2008

This is the best beach hotel we know. It's clean, comfortable, and has great pools in addition to the loveliest, least crowded beaches on the Atlantic. We were in a non-ocean view room to save money. (The rooms are pricey in season!) Fortunately, though, our terrace allowed us to walk right out to the pools, and past them, it was a few short steps to the dunes. Our beds were comfortable, housekeeping visited frequently, and plenty of fresh towels were available. The printer on the free access computer in the lobby was broken while we were there, which made it hard to get directions to attractions and back home, but I'm sure it's fixed by now!

The staff was fabulous and friendly. One gentleman at the desk helped us out by playing along with a treasure hunt scheme we had concocted for our kids. I snuck out to a deserted early morning beach and buried pirate treasure. Then, the staff member lay in wait for my kids, called them over to the desk, spun a story of Blackbeard dropping off a message, and gave them the treasure map! They also accomodated us on check-in when we arrived early by providing us with directions to a great local wildlife center, and then calling us when our room was ready.

The breakfasts were tasty, and the 24 hour coffee was fresh. The indoor pool was a great asset when it was raining, and the outdoor pool and lazy river were small but entertaining. The beach is as advertised - merely steps away, and so lovely. The only drawback was the bugs - when we were there, so were a lot of biting flies that encouraged you to stay in the surf and off the beaches! (But we were there during a huge heat wave, which may have had something to do with it.)

The hotel has an adorable cat who wanders around the pool area. Guests like to feed it from the complimentary breakfasts. We found that if you give her some turkey from your in-room refrigerator, she'll sleep on your terrace and be your best friend while you're there. If you don't like cats, just don't feed her - she knows where her bread is buttered! We "named" her Carolina (after the state) but I don't think she really has a name.

We didn't want to leave, and can't wait to come back.

We stay at Hampton Inns wherever we go for their luxurious beds, so we were pretty surprised when we plunked down on the rock hard mattress. Since I have back problems, my husband then left & spent the next 2 hours looking for a foam pad to put on it, after having driven several hours initially to get to Corolla. The foam pad helped a lot. The room has a bit of a dated look for it, especially for a Hampton Inn, but it was clean & we had a great view. Free breakfast is an insulin fest. Staff was great.
We don't think we'll return here & it's helped to dim our impressions of Hampton Inns.

We were very pleased with our entire experience at the Hampton Inn. When I called to make our reservations, it was handled directly at the resort as opposed to a main switchboard which was a pleasant surprise. I was able to get a discounted rate through AAA and the associate offered an upgrade to a better room since they had the availability.

We arrived at the property after midnight and I was had come prepared with my confirmation number. It was not necessary as the front desk associate had our reservation readily available and promptly checked us in. There was even a small gift bag with a bottle of water and some snacks provided as part of the check in. The room was furnished with the same bed and linens as provided in a Hilton room. The accommodations were spacious and very clean.

The continental breakfast was above average and the area was kept tidy throughout. Checkout was a breeze! I definitely felt like I had stayed at a Hilton vs. a Hampton Inn property. We would recommend the place to others with no hesitation.

Never having been to the Outer Banks, we decided to spend our anniversary weekend in November there with our two boys, ages 7 and 12.

We arrived at midnight on a Friday night, and checked out Monday morning. Check in was very easy, and the staff was friendly and welcoming, especially after the 7 hour drive. I had booked an oceanfront suite, since it was the less expensive off-season. The room was on the top floor (3rd), directly facing the ocean. Although it was a smoking room, it did not smell. The hallway did have an odor of smoke, but it did not travel into our room. The room was a "suite", and it was very roomy. It was at least 25 feet wide, with both a balcony and double window along the ocean side. The two queen beds were on one wall, and a sleeper sofa was on the opposite wall. The bathroom was very clean and roomy, and there was plenty of counter space around the sink. The closet was large and had a safe inside.

The kitchenette had a small refrigerator/freezer, microwave, cofee maker, sink and cabinets. (There are no utensils or cookware). There are two outdoor pools, and an indoor pool and hot tub. Next to the indoor pool was a small gym, with a few treadmills etc. and a large TV. The indoor pool was actually very nice, and the boys spent some time swimming every day. There is also a small game room in this area as well.

The complimentary breakfast was very nice- Fresh fruit, yogurt, pastries, cereals, milk, juice, coffee tea, hot chocolate, etc. were available every morning. The hot breakfast choices were different every day: waffles, eggs, sausage patties. I may have forgotten some items from this list.

This hotel is really ON the beach. There is a small sand dune behind the hotel, and a set of wooden stairs that leads to the beach. You can be in the ocean within two minutes of leaving your room, literally. At high tide, the beach was not very wide, but there was plenty of room to walk the beach and fly a kite.

Driving to and from Corolla takes some time, since the speed limit varies from 25 to 45 in some places. There are long stretches of expensive beach houses (many rentals) in this area, and we used a car to get around. It seemed much more peaceful in Corolla than Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, etc. It was a little too quiet for my husband, though, and we did drive to Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills and Nags Head every day.

All in all, the hotel provided a very nice stay. The only negative were the beds. They were not very comfortable, and we all woke up with sore backs... I never have this type of issue, so I can honestly say that the beds were involved. Ironically, there was literature in the room and at the front desk discussing the new beds which were arriving very soon. I suppose that they must have received some negative feedback concerning their beds.
I would suggest asking about this issue when booking this hotel. I would have rated our experience as "excellent" otherwise.

  • Liked — Hotel is really ON the beach
  • Disliked — The beds are uncomfortable (but are being replaced)

My husband and I loved this hotel. The rooms were comfortable and clean, the staff warm and friendly. The included breakfast is lavish and the lobby beautiful. The views are incredible and the location is delightfully secluded for a quiet getaway. Great off season rates and idyllic seaside villages to roam. Lovely!

We arrived in Corolla on Sunday, September 9th - right in the middle of the forcasted Tropical Storm Gabriella. The staff kept us informed prior to our arrival by phone and when we arrived. The forcasted bad weather never did reach us and the morning of Monday September 10th arrived bright and sunny and we had a beautiful stay. The three pools are wonderful and the sand and surf are just a short walk over the dune. We had a room on the third floor overlooking the retention pond and the sea oats. The room was clean, neat and well appointed. We took advantage of the refrig and microwave and purchased supplies to make our lunch and take it to the beach/pool. There are no restaurants close by - the breakfast was the usual Hampton fare. We spent three nights there - we wish we could have stayed longer.

  • Liked — three great pools and proximity to the beach
  • Disliked — no close restaurant

This was our first visit to the Outerbanks and we loved it. The hotel is steps from the beach which itself is clean and not crowded.
I had read reviews before booking and was very happy to find that they did not exaggerate.
Corolla is beautiful and we loved it's atmosphere compared to Nags Head or Kill Devil Hills which is quite over developed.
The room we stayed in was very bright and airy and overlooked the dunes - we didn't mind as it was right by the pier - the beach was less than a minute's walk.
The staff was friendly and helpful - our refrigerator didn't seem to cool and they sent someone over to check within minutes of our calling the front desk.
The outdoor pool was on the small side but our kids loved it and the small lazy river next to it made up for it. Even the indoor pool and hot tub were never crowded.
I would stay here again.
