“Great Location”
Reviewed August 17, 2015 for a stay in July 2014

The house was just ok. It was older and weathered. Upon arrival the floors had sand on them. I know its the beach, but I would like to check into a clean home. The beds weren't very comfortable and the bathrooms weren't very clean. The washer and dryer wasn't working right and even if it did, I wouldn't do my laundry in it because of the sulfer smell in the water. With that being said, where the house was lacking, the location is awesome!! As long as you are not the nervous type. House is located in the 4x4 section of Corolla, there are no paved roads and you must drive on he beach. Even with a 4x4 and letting the air out of the tires, some parts of the beach can be challenging. A little nerve wracking when you have small children with you. But the best part is seeing the wild horses just walking along the beach. You never know when they will show up. Some times they would be right outside the house and we could watch them while drinking our coffee. I would probably never rent another house there because I felt it just wasn't very convenient. But I would recommend visiting the area on a day trip and staying somewhere else. But if I were to stay on he 4x4 beach again, I would probably pay a little more and stay in a more up to date, modern home.

The review is from a guest who stayed in July 2014 prior to Tropical Storm Arthur and who decided to leave early due to the weather. Most of the review is out of context or no longer relavent. The washer has been replaced and the water treatment system upgraded. I do want to address any concern someone would have about being on the 4x4 beach. The paved road is a short 5 minute drive from the house. I monitor the expected path of any tropical depression very carefully. Even a weak Nor'easter brushing the Outer Banks 150 miles out at sea if it stays out there can cause some storm surf, above average tides, wind and rain. The ground around the house could get a few puddles. For the most you can pass around these pools. There are some significant dunes between you and the ocean especially on the northeast side where the wind typically comes from. The house is third row. It is build above code and it can take the wind. If a storm becomes a hurricane and it's forecasted path comes closer you may have to get out of there. Local officials monitor the potential hazards and will make a decision about whether to evacuate or not. Stay tuned to TV and NOAA weather radio. Contact Dare County at 252-475-5655 or www.co.dare.nc.us and Currituck County at 252-232-2115 or www.co.currituck.nc.us for the most current info. Here are some preparations you would want to make. Charge cell phones, buy extra batteries or a car charger. Gas up your vehicle. Ideally you would want to minimize the distance to reach safety. The area around Duck has been known to flood. Map your route ahead of time. And observe the tides for ideal low tide conditions. The nearest evacuation destination is the bridge on N Croatan Hwy/ US 158 W. The Evacuation Route is clearly marked. If ordered to evacuate.. do it immediately... expect congestion on HWY 12. Your safety is my main concern. Call or text me or Ken if you have any questions. 919-770-5529 919-602-5184.
NO REBATE OR REFUND will be offered for circumstances including but not limited to Acts of God, acts of governmental agencies, fire, strikes, terrorism, war, inclement weather, including flooding and construction noise from nearby sites. You may elect to purchase Travel Insurance. Your decision with respect to the purchase of Travel Insurance is solely your own responsibility. All questions concerning coverage or claims should be directed to your Travel Insurance Agent. You will not be eligible for reimbursement if you do not purchase travel insurance prior to taking possession of the Premises. Additionally, insurance must be purchased prior to a storm being named to have coverage for hurricane-related issues, such as a mandatory evacuation. You will receive a full refund of any payment only if the premises is re-rented. If you choose to leave early or cancel last minute and the house re-rents at a reduced rate you will receive a partial refund. I have some flexibility since I manage my home. I understand things happen. I do my best to re-rent and in some cases I have made up lost dates. In past years I have rescheduled guests and given discounts, not only for weather but also for illness, death in the family, custody problems and deployment. Under certain circumstances I've kept the offer of replacement dates open for several seasons. I will make a reasonable effort to ensure you have similar days to the lost ones. I will have the sole right to select the make-up dates. There is limited availability in the summer season. I you want 3 days on the weekend in August for example, it will be difficult but it's not impossible. I often have requests for partial weeks and may be able to juggle schedules. I will also need to be able to get unscheduled cleaning service and be reimbursed for fees. You have the options 1) to accept a full week, Saturday to Saturday and pay any additional money for days that are not make-up days and reserve in advance. 2) to accept a partial week which can only be reserved 2 weeks in advance during high season and 30 days in advance during off peak season. 3) or reject both options and forfeit the rents and fees paid. The Rental Agreement is clear with regards to liability. The choice between these alternatives will be your sole remedy for any and all inconveniences arising out of events beyond my control which may interfere with your scheduled occupancy.

“First Vacation on 4 x 4 beach”

We did not really know what to expect, but had a great experience. Driving on the beach was fun and exciting. It was kind of a pain adjusting tire pressure, but that was minor.
The house was nice and the views and seclusion were spectacular. We saw horses everyday along with deer, rabbits and quail.
Close neighbors on one side were a little loud each night, but did not hamper our enjoyment of the house/location.
The shower in the master bath is quite small, but there is a large garden tub.
The bedrooms are on the first level with the kitchen/living room on the top level; lots of stairs.
The chairs and beach toys provided were great; a big plus.
Great place for our dog; enjoyed the gate on the deck to keep him safe.

“Great location!”

We had a great time at this beach house. The weather was very cold, but the house had plenty to entertain young children! The only problem with this area is the outer beach if you are traveling with young children .Cars speed up and down the beach all day long. There is a private beach down the road, but it is not within walking distance.

The beach road and ebb and flow of the tide is part of Outer Banks living, whether one is here for a week or for a lifetime! Those living or vacationing in the 4x4 beaches of Corolla are perhaps the most tide-dependent on the Outer Banks. For them the sand is the thoroughfare. People drive on the beach in 2 places. High up at the dune line or at the tide line where the sand is wet and packed down. The middle of the beach is for vacationers to park or put up beach chairs and canopies. The speed limit is 15 mph where there are people and it’s strictly enforced by police patrols. Most people are considerate and drive below the speed limit and stop for pedestrians. There are upwards of 500 people a day coming and going on the 4 wheel drive beach. It is the top attraction for beach goers, guests, and sightseeing tours and makes up a huge part of the area business. The location of my house is advertised as being private and most people prefer it for both it's natural beauty and proximity to the town of Corolla and amenities. There are some significant dunes between you and the ocean especially on the northeast side where the wind comes from and you don’t see any traffic. The house is third row. You have wonderful views and will have the horses visit often. Actually when you get there you sometimes have a couple waiting for you in the driveway! The kids love it. The beach and the water are great. I'll sometimes take the Jeep and park with everyone on the beach. I can take chairs, boogie boards, the canopy tent and snacks and sit and relax for a while. You always find someone to socialize. My grandkids go out into the surf wearing life jackets & use floatation devices like boogie boards and inner tubes. There are no lifeguards on the 4 wheel drive beach. If you're unsure it's probably best to stay in the shallow surf or tide pools. There's volleyball, kites and sea shells. The horses roam free only on the 4 Wheel Drive Beach between the end of the road in Corolla and the Virginia border. They walk the beach and even swim occasionally. There's also a new bike trail and you can ride for miles between the towns or to the waterfront at the Whalehead Club (Lighthouse). There are 2 parks with nature trails with platforms overlooking marshes open to the public. There are a lot of activities to choose from in Duck and Kitty Hawk like kayaking, parasailing and surfing lessons. There's a children's museum and some great shops.
There are sand trails behind the dunes where the houses are. These are used by some residents and the wild horse tours. Like most area residents I'm very protective of the ecology. Aside from being able to walk to the beach in 1 minute I'm happy to be part of the Seagull and Swan Beach community of the 4 Wheel Drive Beach with it's several hundred houses. We have great police and fire protection services. If there are people violating the speed limit you should tell the local police. Officers on atvs who patrol the beach will give out tickets if they catch anyone speeding.
There are no problem times. I rent all year. On Memorial Day the season starts in full swing. The water is not super warm yet in June but if the currents are right you can swim. The fresh produce and seafood markets open. There’s a jazz festival. It is quite busy Saturdays and Sundays and it gets extremely busy from June to August, so if you want solitude just avoid those months. If you wait until the fall the traffic on the beach has reduced.

“Great Location”
Reviewed July 27, 2014 for a stay in July 2014

The house was located in a great area of the beach. It had beautiful views of sand dunes, sun sets, and wild horses. The kitchen had everything we needed to cook meals daily for our family. It is just a very short walk to the beach. The beds were very comfortable and the house was clean upon check in. The only issue was the washer did not work which made it difficult with the laundry situation. We contacted the owner and she said they were getting a new washer in.

“Beautiful House, but Flawed Items of Support”
Reviewed July 2, 2014 for a stay in June 2014

First, the home is beautiful, and nicely appointed, at least for the things that are there and working. We had three "instant problems" on getting there. First is the area itself, not the house's fault, but you should know it. It's in the "4WD" area. We have a wonderful 4WD wagon, but one needs a vehicle that is not only 4WD, but also "high clearance," as the ruts in the sand leave high "hills" between them. Second is that the people who go there, well, there were large numbers of Confederate Flags and Tea-Party Flag-fliers. The people we actually met were nice, but one is surrounded also by a lot of noisy people who run their vehicles WAY OVER the 15 MPH speed limit. On actual arrival there, we found the owner's instructions on how to find the house at best miswritten. Implies that the sand path to take is the last one before the house that's out on the beach. WRONG. It's the next-to-last, so we were lost for quite a while. We then found the home had NO water in the two empty water bottles. And, the lower level had NONE of the lights working for the hallway or staircase. And - really annoyingly - although the decks had light boxes on them, only one of all those light boxes worked at all. They're not the kind of item that one can simply "change the light bulb," but are sealed/screwed-down boxes, so we had to go without using the decks anytime after dark. About mid-week, we had arrive, unannounced and without any I.D,, a fellow who claimed to be with a management agency, who wanted to fiddle with the water supply - it's not "occasionally brown, it's ALWAYS brown" - and who took the two empty water bottles, later dropping off only one. Owner said that she had just hired a new management company - I suggested to her that, if I were the owner, I would fire them. Oh, the coded entry has problems. Sticks badly. Yes, if you have with you the details on how to open the combination, then you can get to a key, but, if you've just "gone to the beach," and didn't remember the combination or how to work that lock, you can be locked OUT. Again, very lovely house, very well decorated, but a lot of slips that seemed to go even beyond the "beginning-of-summer" glitches.

I hope my returning and future guests are able to communicate freely with me. I am always available by text, email or phone if you have any questions or concerns. I truly wish folks have a good experience on the Outer Banks. In order for that to happen you need a 4X4, not an AWD on the 4 wheel drive beach. Guests can't rent without first confirming that they have the proper vehicle or are using taxi service. I send out detailed driving directions and helpful links with tide charts and video instructions for people who have never driven on the beach. I also send the general rental info which gives a list of amenities. Please be patient as some times the assessment and weekday cleaning process after the last guests’departure will strain limited resources. Especially if the guest failed to mention 2 Great Danes and 3 extra people and the house had damage and was left very dirty. The free 5 gallon bottles of water may be delivered about an hour after you arrived. In that circumstance you still won't have to go without bottled water because there is reverse osmosis bottled water on tap at the kitchen sink. The houses on the 4x4 beach have private wells. The water is potable. It is slightly discolored from natural organic tannin found in vegetation. It's similar to pale tea. It won't harm you. My water treatment system is specially designed to remove bacteria, iron and sulfur. Then a chlorinator sanitizes the water and then it's filtered one more time by a carbon filter. I am always looking to improve the appearance of the water. I hope to have an anion resin tank to remove tannin soon. Most people drink bottled water. The water cooler has Le Bleu water. The salt air is tough on locks. The electronic keyless entry was sticking and I added another lock box as backup with a key for it. I also replaced the lock box on the upper entry door. The combination for both is very simple and easy to remember.  Duplicate keys for all entry doors are hanging on the inside by the upper door. There's WD-40 under the sink for lubrication if needed. For minor problem like a burned out bulb; spare bulbs are in the drawer, extra batteries also. All the lights are working fine now. They have been replaced with LED bulbs and should last.

This was perfect for our little family. We spent a fantastic week together and this little beach house made us feel so at home. So many reasons to love this place like beautiful views, horses that came right up to our porch(!), all the accessories that we could have needed, and a lovely owner that made us feel like we were renting from friends rather than a corporation. We are booked again this summer and we are all so excited! I think we have a new tradition and this house and beach are a big part of it.
