“One of the best tours I've ever been on!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 1, 2013

My family and I recently rented a a house in Corolla, NC and were looking for some excursions to fill up our days. After researching and reading reviews we happen to zone in on Back Country Safari Tours. My friend had called to make the reservation and spoke with Dave. Needless to say the conversation that transpired between the two of them were less than desirable BUT we figured (and hoped) he wouldn't be the one who conducted our tour. As we were getting ready for our tour to begin we were greeted by Steve. He was so friendly and gun-ho that I immediately knew this was going to be a great experience. He was super friendly and not to mention intelligent. He not only touched on the wild horses but also gave a very informitive back drop on the land, history and personal experiences. He was also very patient showing us how to Kyack (being that two out of three of us never done it before). It was an experience that we will never forget and we owe it to Steve! So, Steve, if your reading this thanks for being such an awesome tour guide AND for recommending The Kill Devil Grille ( which I will most def be posting about as well). You and your wife are wonderful people! Best of luck to the both of you and hey, maybe we'll be down for another tour one day- and those chicken wings-gotta love those wings!! ;). And to all of you reading, it's hard to find things worth your money these days but you don't have to look farther than this place!

“Fun Experience!”

We drove on the beach and saw a few horses on our own, however on our tour with Schwinn, we learned a ton about the area and saw at least 20 horses (and foal).

“Fun OBX tour and Great tour guide”

We truly had a great time on our beach and wild horse tour. Going off-road on that sugar sand is not for the feint of heart and not really a good idea for all-wheel-drive. You really need a 4 wheel drive for this. Even then you better know what you are doing. One of the first things we learned was how often people require towing (Larry the tow truck guy is one of the wealthiest people on the island). But the Safari tour took us back behind the dunes on an open air type roller coaster ride through some rugged places. Safari is one of only two companies that has access to the "pasture." The locality offered these companies an opportunity to purchase rights to this land but only two bought in and Safari is one of them. This is important because, If you don't get back into the pasture you probably won't see horses.

Our guide Chris was awesome. This guy truly cared about his customers and his job. He could probably have been on unemployment but instead he drives 1.5 hours each week and spends his week hoteling near the resorts in order to do this job. Then drives all the way back to Eliz. Cty. on weekends. His knowledge of the area and sights was superb and did and excellent job keeping us engaged (and safe) on our tour.

“Great family outing!”

We thoroughly enjoyed our tour of the outer banks, provided by Chris. The kids loved seeing the wild horses, and Chris thrilled them with his "4 wheeling" in the sand dunes. Chris had a ton of great knowledge we never would have discovered on our own and was a great guide for our group.
