We were limited by my leg injury, on crutches, so we just took the elevator to the gift shop and then made it up 44 wooden stairs to Chimney Rock. It provides a great view of the valley of Lake Lure.

Further steps lead to Opera Rock and the peak at Exclamation Point. Had I not been disabled, I'd definitely have wanted to go all the way up.

In the tunnel for the elevator, a sign marks where you can expect a 15-minute wait. That matters because you can opt for the path up to the rock that most people can cover in about 20 minutes. Why stand in a boring line when you can get more of a workout and enjoy more nature?

I thought the $15/person fee was a bit high; they did discount it to $12 since one of the trails was closed. That didn't help us much anyhow, given (again) my being in crutches. I'd definitely like to visit again when we had more time.

Worth the climb! My husband and I walked the 45 minute trail and then climbed the stairs to the top. Very tiring but worth. Bus rides are available if you do not want to walk the trail. They have a couple giftshops and an ice cream shop at the top!

Beautiful view - could see Lake Lure and far beyond on a clear day! The Waterfall area was closed due to a rock slide, but they gave a $2.00 discount off the entrance fee to accommodate.

Our first visit to Chimney Rock was in 2011, when the elevator was being renovated. We made it up to the top with regular pauses to take photographs: a great excuse for getting one's breath back! Spectacular views as the air was very clear that day and the leaves were just beginning to turn. Knowing that this year's US road trip was to take us to the same area, and that the elevator was scheduled to have re-opened, we decided to revisit. A few weeks before we left home, however, the park's newsletter advised that the elevator had been taken out of action for repairs again!! We did revisit, and climbed the stairs again (four hundred and ninety-something each way) in early September 2013 high humidity: not particularly pleasant but an achievement of which to feel proud. If we are ever in the area again we will probably visit once more. Who knows, perhaps the elevator will be working!

The view is awesome. No word can tell. It is just breathtaking going out of the elevator and watch this beauty. You can climb extra steps to the top. We saw a black snake there...the road to town is not so comfortable - if you can't stand the turns - close your eyes and wait....our little girl didn't feel well on road but the moment we went out of car she was just fascinated from this place. A must do!!!
