“Must do better”
Reviewed December 25, 2012

Generally not inclined to write negative reviews, but this is a sort-of service to other diners, no? Especially those who will spend this kind of money.

We arrived 5 minutes late for our reservation and were told our table wasn't quite ready. There were many empty visible tables inside. The gentleman who greeted us asked if we'd like to check our coats, and would we like a drink while we waited. He, apparently, on a busy Saturday night, was the host, the coat-check man, and the bartender. Others came in behind us. It took forever for him to do all these things, for all of these people. Eventually we got our drinks but the table took considerably longer. We were seated maybe 40 minutes after our reservation time; on our way to our seats we passed many tables still empty, but noticed that they had not been set yet, after diners that had left some time ago.

We were greeted hastily and very casually, we thought, for this kind of place ("how are you guys"), menus dropped in a single stack in vront of one of us. We asked for a bottle of sparkling water and he returned and poured tap water into our glasses. He rushed through a list of specials. We weren't thinking this was our waiter but rather someone keeping us busy until our waiter could appear. He was our waiter. The sparkling water came eventually.

There were combinations of prix-fixe options. Most of them had additional combinations of upcharges. It was kind of odd, and meals suddenly became very expensive.

Our meals were just ok. Foie gros appetizer was tiny, tiny, and somehow sort of runny. "Baby" lobster tails added to specials (an upcharge of course) were also tiny. Understand we aren't the types who want giant plates of food. Lamb was really, really, really cooked. Desserts were lesser variations of what was listed, or simply unavailable. Espresso was not good.

It is a beautiful room. Everyone who attended to us was friendly, and seemed to be doing their very best. And yet, this was a very expensive, very mediocre meal. They must do way better than this. Was it the holiday season? Was it because of the large party in the next room?

Is there a New York bias to this review? Maybe, but these were every bit New York prices. And Charlotte isn't a little town any longer.

We had to get our own coats on the way out, from the closet we'd see the man go into when we arrived. There was no longer anyone to be seen in the front of the house. There were some nice coats in that closet.

“Great food, but expensive and only so/so atmosphere”
Reviewed December 19, 2012

To be honest, the food here is really wonderful, but it's also very expensive and the atmosphere is only so/so. (It's opposite the Southpark mall on the first floor of an office building.)

I've lived in Charlotte 17 years and have only gone here 4 or 5 times (when I had a promotional offer.) Each time I have gone I have been blown away by the food. It's really special. But I also say to myself each time that I go, that I wouldn't come here without some sort of promotional discount -- just too expensive.

Overall, I'd say that if you are willing to spend some $'s, this is a much better choice than the nearby Palm or Ruth Chris Steak house, but if you don't want to spend the $'s there are a lot of other choices in the are that are good.

“First and Final Visit”
Reviewed December 12, 2012

After spending the day Christmas shopping, my two friends and I decided to "treat" ourselves to a nice dinner. None of us had dined at Zebra, so we decided to give it a try. After being seated we were greeted by our waiter who asked if this was our first visit. When we replied "yes", his answer was "welcome back" - obviously not listening. I asked about the preparation of the scallop appetizer, to which he replied "sautéed with some bread crumbs" - in other words, order and do not ask questions. It was obvious that we were a nuisance to him from the beginning. After choosing our entrees, we decided on a bottle of white wine. We were shocked when it was served in very "cheap" red wine glasses (dessert wine was served in the same type of glass) - how did they ever get Wine Spectator Award of Excellence? Compliments to the chef - the food was absolutely delicious - too bad our "front of the house" experience ruined the evening. For dessert we chose a "sampler" which, among other things included Creme brûlée (our favorite). When the dessert was delivered there was no Creme brûlée - our waiters reply when questioned "We're out of Creme brûlée, gave you extra of others". A 20% gratuity was added to our check (including the cost of the wine), so our waiter had no incentive to give good service. At over $100 per person, we expected so much more from Zebra - thoroughly disappointed never to return. There are too many other excellent restaurants in Charlotte.

I would say that the food is good buy not as good as the price would demand. Heavily sauced. On occasion they seem to have an attitude about them. I prefer a more relxed friendly approach.

“Best of Charlotte”
Reviewed December 11, 2012

There are few places in Charlotte that are fine dining but this is one of those amazing gems. Chef owner Jim Alexander is a talent. He is also a perfectionist which comes out in every meal I have ever had there.

Don't miss this place for the best of bests in Charlotte, this rivals the best fine dining anywhere!
