I have been to the Arboretum Shopping Center many times. I have seen this place from the outside and assumed it was just another Chinese fast-food place. My step-daughter found a coupon in the local "Clipper" magazine so we decided to give it a try. Upon walking inside I was totally shocked to find a real full-service bar and a nice sit-down restaurant.

The service was awesome and our server recommended the Beef Noodle Soup (Hong Kong style) and a few appetizers (steamed chicken dumplings).. (chef makes them on site).. It was oh so good that I returned the next day to have the Duck Noodle Soup.. and the Hollow Chinese Vegetable with Beef.

Some favorites that we saw come out of the kitchen multiple times were Pud Thai noodles and Udon noodles.

The staff was eager to please and create things that were not on the menu and to modify several dishes. I have been back to this restaurant more than 8 times. It never disappoints. Prices are very reasonable. Decent wine/beer selection also. Servers act like your friends.

From the outside, I would have never thought this jewel would exist.

Oh so happy I found it, right in my back yard.

I have been there with family, solo and as a couple. It is suitable for all.

If you love good Asian food, you will WOW over Malaya Kitchen. Everything is fresh, well prepared, and generous. Among the best Asian menus in the city. Also quiet enough to have nice table conversation. Service is outstanding. Loved the round table in front for the family. I had had the soft-shell crab in hot sauce. Unbelievable! Everyone else loved their dishes.

This is a very small Asian restaurant that specializes in Malaysian cuisine. It is in the old section of the Arboretum Shopping Centre, probably not in the The food is well presented, tastes good and the service is excellent, especially if you come early. On Saturday night around 6pm, there were only two other couples. Mango curry was exceptionally good. On a cold day, ask for a Green tea.
We did not find the menu to be too extensive & would probably prefer more Malaysian menu items and not as many Chinese or Thai.. Still, a good value for money & great staff.

If you are an aficionado of savoury Asian cuisine, like me - your trip to Charlotte would be incomplete without a visit to Malaya Kitchen. Nestled inconspicuously between flashier shops at the Arboretum Shopping Center, this little gem offers an extensive variety of Malaysian, Thai, Chinese and Indian dishes to tickle the taste buds. Must haves are the traditional Malaysian Laksa Curry bowl, a coconut cream based curry with two types of noodles, chicken and many vegetables including egg plants, green beans, mushrooms, etc; old-fashioned Roti Kennai served with a savoury curry; mixed vegetables with basil; and, the piece de resistance (not on the menu) and recommended only if you can take very spicy foods, is the Cilantro Chicken. Guaranteed you will be back for more!

Probably one the better variety menues you'll find in that area. Food tastes verygood (better than most asian restaurants) and the service is great. Small outdoor seating and the decor is good but not special - more on the average side.
