My wife and I had dinner at Emzy the other night. A month or so ago we had lunch. The room is nice - fairly small, modern, corporate and impersonal, but not in an offensive sort of way. Our dinner server was excellent - she could not have been better. The food was "nothing to write home about," but was inexpensive. Not counting the cost of a bottle of wine, my wife and I shared a sushi for appetizer and a shrimp main dish, plus we had our own bowls of soup, for under $28, total. I'm just not sure about the food - fresh made or frozen dinner? In any case, I'd be willing to give it another try.

A note about the location. Emzy is stuck into the back corner (open to the street) of the Duke Energy office building in downtown Charlotte. For whatever reason, Charlotte's downtown business district (marketed as "uptown") is impersonal. Store and restaurant fronts are generally separated along the streetscape by blank walls and parking decks, and with mininal signage to attract attention. Thus, you've got to hunt for them. Emzy's location suffers particularly from being somewhat out of the way and isolated, even in this context.

Very good service. Ordered the fresh roll app and was good but the sauce was a bit lacking. Had the shrimp with broccoli in brown sauce for entree. Very fresh and flavorful. I would recommend this restaurant, at least for lunch.

Bought a GroupOn and visited around 9:00 p.m. on a Saturday evening. The place is a little difficult to find, but once inside we found the decor and atmosphere upscale and nice. Emzy was about 1/3 full of patrons so our reservation was not in jeopardy.

Our observation was the staff was not well trained. We ordered martini's only to return them because they "were out of olives" and the waitress made them with lemon juice--bitter! Apparantly, they do not have a bartender thinking most would order wine or beer. The replacement drinks were not well made, either. At $10 each they were a waste of money.

What disappointed us the most was the slowness of getting food to the table. Each time we placed an order for a sushi roll, a minimum of 20-25 minutes would pass before service. Oddly, both of our orders were placed on the same platter with no explanation of who's food belong to whom. The food, however, was very good but the service was poor. It wasn't like the staff was rude, but it was obvious they lacked training in upscale dining. With so-o-o-o many sushi restaurants in Charlotte, they MUST pick up their game or they will become a quick casualty.
