Little Sugar Creek had become an unattractive poorly managed waterway until Charlotte decided to clean it up, restore it to a more natural waterway undoing years of abuse and create a walkway and bike path that would be a jewel in the city instead of an eyesore. They recently finished improving pathways, retaining walls, seating areas, landscaping and gathering areas to hold special events like the Clean and Green Expo and have created a beautiful link in the city that connects Central Piedmont Community College, The Metropolitan shopping center, Kings Ave, Freedom Park and the Nature Museum with a peaceful scenic experience. There are even a few restaurants that have views right onto the greenway. The path really is not long enough for serious cyclists but the surrounding neighbors are worth exploring. Hold your breath if you cruise past Carolina Medical Center at lunch time - the staff is out smoking on the greenway but for the most part, you won't find it crowded during the weekdays. You will get some nice views of uptown Charlotte from the north part of the greenway, but in other locations, because you are mostly below street level, it is easy to forget you are in heart of Charlotte. Hopefully they can extend the greenway - this could become a real landmark for the city.
