My wife and I joined another couple for dinner at Basil Thai before heading to the Charlotte Symphony's Christmas concert.
We had an assortment of things from the menu, including: Pad Thai and Sweet & Sour Chicken (both were very tasty but rather typical -- and quite expensive at $15.95 each), Masaman Curry (delicious, $14.95) and the Green Papaya Salad ($8.95). So we all felt the food was good -- but we have had as good and sometimes better for far less money.
The ambiance of the restaurant could not possibly be any LESS Asian. Mind you, I'm not looking for pagodas and ornately gilded woodwork, but something to visually or audibly indicate that you are eating in an upscale Thai restaurant would have helped the place feel something other than neutral.
Service was very good, so no problems there at all -- but none of us felt that the overall experience matched the prices they charged. That may well be our fault though -- we looked at the menu online prior to making reservations and were anticipating a higher level of cuisine and interior design -- and a cooler vibe -- than they actually delivered.
Sadly, a rather forgettable dining experience.
