“Trendy Hotel”

My son booked us overnight, Saturday September 12, 2009 at the Aloft. Reminded me of Copenhagen, Denmark. Very modern! Staying here was a treat. The staff was very nice! My family went to Carolina Panthers game but I waited at the hotel. Staff was very friendly! Definitely in the heart of everything.

Stayed 3 nights for a Sunday football game. Would stay again if ever back in Charlotte.

Pros: clean, modern, located adjacent to great Charlotte entertainment & nightlife complex (Epicentre), nice center city location, well appointed guest rooms
, free internet access
Cons: a little tough to find (not well marked from the street), self parking instructions not clear (park underground in the Epicentre complex), housekeeping was inconvenient on both of the full days we stayed (day #1 left at 9:00 a.m., came back at 3:30 p.m. and still not done. Day #2 left at 11:00 a.m. , came back at 5:00 p.m. and still not done. We told the maid to forget it when she knocked 15 minutes later.

I have seen two other negative comments made by people on this site, and I understand both. One pertained to the outside noise levels. Definitely ask for the side opposite the Epicentre if this is an issue (although street noise can be easily heard on this side, even from our 15th floor room - I am sure they could' ve had a better design plan or way of insulating against outside noise). The other issue was of the need to take two separate elevators to get to your room from the self park garage and/or the street. Due to tripadvisor, we were aware of this but considered it a minor inconvenience as we have been to other hotels with similar elevator arrangements in the past.

Difficult to manage parking, drunk guests in the elevators, and endless amounts of noise (even on the quiet side of the hotel) make this a very questionable stay if you do not have any business in the EpiCentre area (leisure or otherwise). Even on a Thursday night from the 15th floor, there was endless amounts of traffic drone, street-noise, and general drunk and disorderly conduct audible from the room in to the early morning hours. In addition, the noises of people walking by the common hallway, and closing their doors was very apparent.

The good however, gives the entire Aloft concept some hope. Intelligently designed rooms, free internet, cordless phones, and a modern approach to the bathroom and shower, in addition to a 42" flat screen TV with desk mounted HDMI, VGA, and composite video-in (some hotels lock these extra inputs out) make it clear that Aloft has catered to the contemporary traveler. A safe big enough for a laptop, coffee and tea facilities and an empty refrigerator round out the amenities nicely. I found the self-service cafe items to be reasonably priced, and the wraps tasted relatively fresh, considering I made a purchase at 11am.

Finally, as a new test I perform in all hotels with internet access, speedtest.net reported a remarkable 9.9 Mbps down, and 7.9 Mbps up transfer speed. Exceptional considering it is complementary.

First off, if you are driving a car tack on an extra $20 to whatever room price you were quoted because you will need to overnight your car at a garage. Second, the rooms are noisy because they overlook the Epicentre nightclub/restaurant district which doesn't shut down until late (at least on the weekends). When we arrived on a Saturday night we had to unload our luggage by ourselves in the middle of a busy valet stand with no assistance and no luggage carts. You then have to schlepp your bags into the building, up one elevator and then over to another elevator to get to the room. I never saw a single luggage cart and not one person offered us assistance. The room was nice but the configuration and location of this hotel are all wrong. Whoever planned and designed this hotel did any extremely poor job of considering the customer check-in/check-out experience.

My friend and I stayed at this hotel for convenience as it is located near the Time Warner Cable Arena and we had tickets to a concert there. The hotel was hard to find due to a very small sign on the building and our GPS took us to the hotel across the street. Front desk staff was very helpful and friendly and the rooms are very clean. However, my friends cosmetic bag was taken from our room which contained all of her makeup and brushes. Aside from that misfortune the stay was fine.

Positives
1. room was great, with great view of city, nice decor, large flat screen tv, clean updated bathrooms
2. great location
3. valet staff was pleasant

Negatives
1.horrible hotel staff
2. 1 working elevator
3. would not accept cash sales anywhere in hotel even refused to break cash for tipping house keeper and valet
4. extremely noisy, band outside was ok and stopped at 2am or sooner, but most guests are noisy, (like college dorm)
4. not a family enviroment
5. staff knows about escorts picking up guests at hotel bar and did not care
6. paper thin walls, could hear people in halls and adjacent rooms talk at a normal voice
7. parking was very confusing, was told free over phone when booking 2 months ago, then arrived and found that it was $20 a day
8. entrance was hard to find, then had to circle around to come back, sign for hotel was very small up a few stories out of easy site
9. a/c was way too noisy for a newer building
10. had to take 2 separate elevators to get to room
11. luggage carts were not in good working order and on the lobby (5th) floor

I would not recommend this place to anyone that has any family that are traveling with them. We will never stay at this hotel ever again.

Aloft was a very cool place to stay for the price ($129). I routinely pay that much for a suburban Hampton Inn. Parking was $10, very reasonable for a center city hotel, I have paid twice as much in D.C. and elsewhere. Friendly check in. Asked me what side of the hotel I wanted to be on - Epicenter or Quiet. I took quiet. Never heard a peep. I never did see an Aloft sign for parking but knew to park at Epicenter. Entered on the west side and plenty of open parking at 6:30 on the night of Alive after 5. Great room design, sliding glass door bath divider, platform bed, flat screen, pedestal sink, a real clock in lieu of a digital clock radio. Had to hunt to find the ironing board. Only quirk was a common light switch for the vanity and light over the bed. I was alone so it didn't wake anybody up.
