“Family fun time.”
Reviewed October 21, 2012

Discovery Place is a science museum located in uptown Charlotte. Younger kids will love this place. Older kids and adults (especially those without children) may find it a bit boring unless you’re coming in to see one of the terrific exhibits that tour here.

Up stairs visitors will find hands on exhibits that will appeal mainly to small children. It is to help them get excited about how since works. If you don’t care to be around giggling screaming kids you will want to avoid it like a model avoids calories. On the lower level there is a small aquarium that others might find appealing but you will not spend much time here. There are also stuffed animals on displays and some smaller displays of items from around the world. The Rainforest is an enclosed area which shows what it is like in the Amazon Rainforest and also a great place for everyone.

The museum has hosted a number of fascinating exhibits over the years that are geared more towards older kids and adults. I have seen the Dead Sea Scrolls, several mummy exhibits, Bodies in Motion, and an exhibit featuring clothes and props from some of the top movies produced. It included Spiderman’s suit! Adults and teens may also enjoy the number of IMAX movies here. Both the IMAX and popular movies have been shown here to include Harry Potter and Batman. You are not required to pay for museum admission as well to see an IMAX movie. The touring exhibits include your admission to the museum. Most recently I was here to see the Mummies of the World exhibit this past summer.

There is a gift shop on the second floor which includes my favorite souviner..the squished penny. Touring exhibits also have a separate gift shop (usually right as you leave the exhibit). There are bathrooms, a café, and handicapped accessible. There is a connecting parking lot next door which charges admission. It is often full and will require you to park in one of the many paid lots nearby and walk. There are also plenty of restaurants nearby if you prefer dining out before or after your visit.

“Don't miss this if you have kids.”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

this is a hands on place...a delightful, educational, fun place for kids of all ages. I don't recommend the restaurant, though. Pricey when there are so many great places to eat just down the block.

“Entertainment and education for kids of all ages”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

The displays are hands on, very well made, and they handle crowds so well you don't realize how many kids are involved at one time. The water room lets them get their hands wet while keeping the rest dry.
