This hotel has made tremendous strides since the flood. While the lower rooms are still being repaired the upper rooms are fine. Ours did have comfortable bed, microwave, fridge. High school reunion was based there and we had fun with music and friends. Food needs improvement but there are many great restaurants close by. Pool is back to normal. Price was a bargain. Location ideal.

Room Tip: Ask for upstairs room on back side away from highway noise.

At first it seemed like kind of a dumpy place from the looks on the outside but the rooms are all very clean. The rooms are small but the bathroom is nice and the tv is good enough. The beds I had no problem with and the pool was wry nice (they even had a little basketball hoop on the edge of the pool). Overall it was a very good experience.

So I'm sitting in my motel room now and have to agree with everything Douglas B. said in his review. The bottom portion of the hotel is being gutted so yeah, there's that. The hotel is old and definitely shows its wear. The beds are uncomfortable. There is no mini-fridge in the room although there is one sitting directly outside my door on the walkway. But the biggest issue for me is how poorly the AC is working and you know it's bad when they provide a fan in-room to combat the heat. Mid-July in NC is bad enough, but this is almost unbearable. If I hadn't booked through Hotwire then I would most definitely go get a refund and go to the quality inn right around the corner. Only positive is the front desk staff, which was exceptionally nice.

When I first arrived, I noticed that the entire bottom floor of the hotel had been flooded two weeks before, and the downstairs rooms were gutted. The pool was closed. My upstairs room did not look much better. The ceiling had stains from leaks, so I could see every beam through the sheetrock. The curtains did not close all of the way. The Zenith (as in ancient) tv had cigarette burns on it. Then, to top it all off, I had to call three times to get the shuttle to pick me up in town. When I asked the driver why he took 40 minutes to pick me up, he got an attitude, He even refused to tell me his name so I could make a complaint. I went to the front desk to ask for the manager, and the driver, whose name I learned was Mike, came in and was rude again. He was so bad that his co-worker Cam called my room afterwards to apologize for his behavior.

Room Tip: Do not stay here.

The University Inn is as good as it will get until they replace it with a new building. The decor is bright and clean. The pool area is nice and relaxing. If you're a TarHeel fan, then you'll appreciate the lobby. The staff is super-nice and professional. However, there is only so much that this property can live up to. It's old and tired looking. The bathroom ceiling tiles are worn and stained, but overall the bathrooms are clean.
If you are looking for a inexpensive, yet clean, hotel...then, the University Inn is a good choice.
Just know that it's an old property with old repairs. BUT, it's perfectly clean and updated to the best of its abilities.

The restaurant is very good. The food and the prices are right in line. The bar appears to have a loyal local following with area sports teams. Lots of cheers and dancing.

Room Tip: We were on the first floor by the pool and the outside noise was not a problem. HOWEVER, the AC uni...

Let me start off first by mentioning how nice the staff was. We were appreciated their favorable pet policy--$40/stay (no size limitation or restriction on number of pets--I'm sure within reason). It is also close to the UNC hospital campus if you have family there as patients. The negative to this property was the mustiness of our room. Granted, it rained a bit during our stay, but you know there's a problem when there's a "moisture absorber" hanging in your closet....I'll give the property props for recognizing the problem, but ONE hanging "moisture absorber" will not do. One of my kids ended up getting sick during our stay--he "dried up" after we left and were back at home. I'm afraid there may be a mold problem in the hotel in regards to how moist our room felt.

The staff at CHUI was accommodating, friendly and helpful. My visit was occasioned by a milestone birthday party and my son's high school graduation. As a result we had lots of family and freidns in town. The rooms were clean, comfortable and convenient. CHUI is money well-spent when visting Chapel Hill.

Room Tip: rooms on the east side are quieter.
