Being a diner fan, I wanted to like this place. I've tried it 3 times and not once has food that should be served hot arrived reasonably warm. I mean, we're talking room temperature. Dishes included: a Reuben sandwich (around 1:30-2 pm post-lunch rush), an omelet (weekday around 8:00-8:30 a.m.), and scrambled eggs (late weekend breakfast about 10:30-11:00 a.m.). With the last of these I'd requested grits -- they were out of 'em. Dependably disappointing.

A pleasant surprise! I'd driven by this place many times and decided to try it on a Sunday morning- we knew it would either be amazing or a disaster. At 9:30am on Sunday we were seated immediately- coffee & french toast were excellent and the service was just right. Nothing fancy, about $10 a person for breakfast but good coffee & generous portion sizes. A good old fashioned diner.

501 Diner serves great food; reasonably priced; friendly service. Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner, you can't go wrong at 501 Diner. They grind their own beef there - that's what makes the burgers the best in Chapel Hill. Try it. You'll like it.
