Allen and Sons is a wonderful NC tradition. Great barbecue, Brunswick stew, hush puppies, sweet tea, and Southern desserts (banana pudding on Friday night is soooo good!). Not at all fancy. Totally without pretense. We love it. We'll be back. Highly recommended for what it is - this is not the Magnolia Grill!

We visited after hearing and reading hearing about it. We were not disappointed and doubt anyone who is looking for a downright simple but finger lickin' barbecue meal will be disappointed either. From barbecue sandwiches to chicken to ribs you won't be disappointed. And the desserts are out of this world. But don't expect it to be a fancy place. It's far from it. You will probably even have trouble finding it, but keep looking ( it looks like a house in the neighborhood) and a when you get there you will be warmly welcomed- almost like going to eat at someone's home. We actually arrived (the first time) just before closing and you would have thought that they would have turned us away. They didn't and nor were we rushed out. sweet tea is very good and the service was too. Since out first visit, we been back because we have family staying in the area. We also recently found out from friends who lived in Chapel Hill over twenty years ago and used to frequent Allen & Son, went back this past year and found that it had not changed. The food was still as great as they remembered. That's good news to us because we plan on going back each time we are in the area.

I have tried this place and it is not good as some people say it is. The last time I had a BBQ sandwich and it was so greasy the bun was soaked and I had to eat the BBQ with a fork. Would not recommend and wonder who finds it good.

The last three times I have been here, the BBQ seems to have changed. I don't know if they changed the procedure or recipe, but the chopped pork doesn't have the smoke or the flavor it used to. The ribs were disappointing. My wife was very happy with her half chicken but the time before, she said it was dry and it sure looked to be.

Barbecue is not good. Sides are only fair. Most things are loaded with black pepper and grease. Service is fair. Do not recommend.
