“Wonderful food ... and very quiet”
Reviewed February 25, 2012

My daughter and I visited on a weekday evening. While we were on the early side, we were surprised to be the first and only guests. From the outside the restaurant looks like a house, and the front rooms offer seating for 8-10 tables each. The back contains a bar area with a television and wood floor. There was enough separation and music in the from dining area (Sinatra and the like) to feel like a private dining room.

We ordered the lamb, which came with an array of vegetables. Everything was delicious and not overcooked; the food came out warm and not steaming. The ice cream and brownie was really a nice touch for dessert. Pricing (entrees in the upper teens and 20's) was reasonable considering the value. Service was attentive and professional without being fussy.

Parking on-street is limited, and we opted for the paid lot 2 blocks east on Rosemary Street, an easy 5-minute walk. While the seating could be more comfortable, the overall experience was a good one, and I look forward to returning. I expect it to be busier next time!

“French-style restaurant with tasty, interesting food”
Reviewed February 20, 2012

Varied menu with unusual combinations, as well as staple main courses and salads. Extensive use of unusual vegetables and very tasty, French-style sauces. Some of the meats are cooked with a new high-tech method of prolonged warm-water immersion, sealed in pouches, which produces a fully cooked, but medium rare appearing, moist and succulent final product which cannot be attained with conventional cooking! Yumm! All 5 of us felt we had had a wonderful dining experience, and the service was perfect. The location is in a repurposed old mansion with wide floor boards, and because of the multiple room design, is very quiet. There is also a covered patio for outside dining in warm weather. I am told by local residents that this is always a reliable, consistent restaurant. The wine list was long, with very good choices by the glass.

“Excellent”
Reviewed February 5, 2012

It's been decades since we have dined at this restaurant. It had gone downhill after Bill Neal divorced his wife, who took over the place. Now, 25 years later, it is back at peak form. All four of us had exceptional meals with excellent service in an atmosphere where we could have a conversation without shouting. Only downsides are that there should be a designated parking area and that the owners need to invest in more comfortable dining chairs.

“Great Special Occasion place”
Reviewed December 29, 2011

The food is outstanding and while not always strictly "French" the style is there and the presentation is there. I have always had very good service which always makes the overall experience that much more enjoyable. Great wine list and they are always willing to help select a bottle that fits the meal and your budget. The only downside as anywhere in downtown Chapel Hill is finding a place to park.
