We started coming here for special occasions then realized that if you ease off on the alcohol and stick to two courses it cost the same as any old hack restaurant on Franklin Street. I like the fact that we are greeted by name when we arrive. We love the use of local ingredients blended with eastern favors. My favorite is always one of the fish dishes. Splash out on a cocktail and you will not be disappointed.

Went here on a Wednesday and by 7PM the place was full. We loved the casual, fun atmosphere in the bar area and really enjoyed the food. The bar was lit by lanterns but there was a not-too-bright regular light above each table which allowed us to easily see our food and each other. We had some great cocktails: the Dark and Stormy" (Blenheim spicy ginger ale, Gosling's dark rum) and the "Late Blossom" (Vodka, Lillet blanc, lychee, orange blossom water). That lychee cocktail was a treat! The bento box was sake and tea-cured wild king salmon that was perfectly prepared. We also had the seafood hotpot - lobster dumplings, wild shrimp, blue crab with locally sourced clams, spring rain noodles, fresh lime leaf, pea greens, and shellfish broth. We had so much fun! I love this place - the food was nuanced, flavorful, just the right touch. A great place to go!

We weren't sure what to expect but our expectations were vastly exceeded. We were late being seated so were treated to an appetizer. The service was perfect, the food absolutely excellent.

This restaurant is one of a handful of favorites of mine across this country. Andrea Reusing, the chef/owner and her team consistently provide a first-class experience, day-in and day-out. I think I've eaten at Lantern nearly 100 times over the years and am always tickled with her creativity, connection back to local ingredients, farms, and vendor and how she's able to nurture her own culinary creativity while still being in touch with her NC roots. In the world of rotating servers, Lantern seems to be able to keep them for years ensuring front of house service that matches the kitchen.

This restaurant won the James Beard award a few years ago. Six of us went and dined outside in their new garden area, very nice, except for the flies. We shared appetizers, the fried okra was good, the sashimi was fine and the shell on salted shrimp were fine-although I was not keen on eating the shell. The green tea chicken, the signature dish was OK but not that special, the whole flounder relied on a side sauce for flavor. The best dish was the beef. All in all, nothing wrong, but nothing WOW. Our server was wonderful and the maitre de was very accommodating. Indoor dinning room is noisy and has a "smell", the bar area is dark and a little exotic. So, it was nice to be in the new outdoor area.
