“Not to Be Missed”
Reviewed November 27, 2012

During a recent visit to Chapel Hill, we came upon the Lantern Restaurant, simply because of its proximity to the hotel we were in. Three vegetarians could not have been happier with our dinner selection! Let me say that this is not a vegetarian restaurant; in fact, there are only a select few vegetarian items on the menu, but the lack of selection is more than compensated for by the rich flavors, wonderful aromas and eye for detail that the kitchen has for presentation. The beets appetizer was delightful, salad and soup were tasty and the Moon View Hotpot was out of this world, with its selection of locally sourced root vegetables and poached egg floating in a savory broth. One note: be sure to secure a reservation; we called late in the afternoon on a Tuesday, and there were only two time slots available between 6:30 & 9:30!

“First time and it was a charm!”

This was (finally) my first time at the Lantern and it was fabulous! You do need reservations, so be sure to take care of that! Food was outstanding as well as the service.

“Amazing food & attentive service”
Reviewed November 18, 2012

Lantern is not to be missed! The menu has delicious food - often from local ingredients mixed in inventive new ways. The mushroom & cabbage dumplings as an appetizer are delicious and their fish main entrees have always been some of the best! The staff is attentive and knowledgable. I recommend going all out - appetizers, main and dessert. It might get a little pricey but it is absolutely worth it!

“Excellent European Asian Food...”
Reviewed November 7, 2012

This restaurant is a 'must do' if in Chapel Hill. The food is of excellent quality with a wonderful mix of flavours. We ordered a couple of appetizers prior to our main courses, and portions were perfect - so much so that we even managed to enjoy a delicious dessert.. We were 'walk-ins' on a Saturday night, so didn't expect to get a table, as the restaurant tends to be booked out two months in advance. We managed however to secure two seats at the back bar, and whilst noisy, it was very social and delivery of food and service were not compromised. Katie is the best bartender ever experienced, and is a huge asset to the establishment. Our onlydisappointment was the wine list which comprises European wines - perhaps perfect for the connoisseur, but disappointing for an Aussie who loves and enjoys high quality Californian chardonnays and reds. Perhaps we should have ordered cocktails instead! Would definitely recommend Lantern for anyone who enjoys fabulous spicy food. It was a real treat!!
