Well, we might as well have visited an unmowed lot. Everything in this area is suffering from drought, and there was very little to see and enjoy. Go in the spring.

The gardens are wonderfully laid out. They are focus on native plants. It was a very enjoyable 1 1/2 hour visit. The admission is free, and the parking is right outside of the main gate.

We visited here as part of a 7 garden tour through North Carolina and Virginia. It is not listed as a GEM in the AAA Tourbook but it is definitely worth seeing especially since it is free. There is a new LEEDS platinum building that is unique as well as an excellent herb garden. There are also some plants for sale.

The uniqueness of this arboretum is that it focuses on flora of the various regions of NC. This is unlike the other 2 aboretums in the area which are more typical international in emphasis -Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh (also free) and Sara Duke Gardens in Durham (free but $2/hr parking).
There is construction on a new educational center. Parking is limited until construction is completed.
