good food, great ambiance , average service.
i will be definitely back.I loved their appetizer platter with garlic naan. Now I am very happy that they are open on Mondays. Because I hate cooking on Mondays. And it is hard to find good open places especially ethnic food.

My wife, daughter and I went to Saffron a few days ago. It has always been a go-to place for us ever since we moved into the surrounding area. This time was definitely a disappointment.

Saffron's cuisine has subtly changed since they opened a few years ago. Whereas the food used to be aromatic, spicy and light on the sauces, that is no longer the case. We had the salmon, mixed vegetables and the spicy cauliflower. All dishes were heavy, either deep fried and oily or creamy with loads of sauce. After only a mouthful or two they all started to taste the same.

The sad part is that if you could push the sauce aside (as with the salmon, for example) the food tasted great. So we believe that Saffron has gone the way of many interesting Indian restaurants that start out with creative use of Indian cuisine and slowly fall into presenting over-prepared, and often unhealthy, dishes. Perhaps an excess of cream in the sauce can disguise many a chef's weakness.

We may go back to give Saffron another try but there are other alternatives in the Chapel Hill area. On the plus side Saffron's wine list is good and affordable and they do continue to make some novel cocktails using Indian ingredients (like tamarind, as an example).

Saffron has never disappointed us in delivering interesting and flavorful Indian food. Not too heavy, appropriate portion size, well presented with a nice wine selection. The staff is attentive, well informed and responsive. If anything our waiter was a bit too sincere and emotive. We just enjoyed a dinner there this past week, and have had very pleasant lunches as well. Their Masala Chai is not as tasty as on the streets of India however.
